VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- The fourth-ranked and top-seeded Washington and Lee women's tennis team defeated second-seeded Roanoke, 5-0, in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship match on Sunday at Virginia Wesleyan.
The conference title was W&L's 13th-straight and the 25th in the 32 years that the ODAC has awarded a women's tennis championship.
The rematch of last year's conference title contest saw the Generals jump out to a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. The senior duo of Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va. / Flint Hill) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C. / Ashley Hall) recorded an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Brooke Donnelly(Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta) and senior Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) registered an 8-2 triumph, while senior Kelsey Vella (Sussex, N.J. / Blair Academy) and first-year Michelle Fleenor (Chattanooga, Tenn. / Girls Preparatory School) posted an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Meighan topped sophomore Emily Henderson at No. 1 singles and Buell downed sophomore Emma Barker at No. 3 singles.
W&L improved to 23-4 overall, while Roanoke dropped to 17-6.
Washington and Lee will receive the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament, which begins on Friday at a site to be determined.
