Emory & Henry Baseball Downs Guilford, 13-5, Wednesday At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (1-4, 1-4 ODAC) picked up its first win of the year on Wednesday afternoon with a 13-5 win over visiting Guilford College (0-5, 0-5 ODAC).

How It Happened
The Quakers got on the board in the top of the first inning when Ellis Stokes singled through the left side to drive in Sam Mennitt. Emory & Henry answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame as senior third baseman Hayden Milley (Clover, S.C. ) and senior designated hitter Chandler Kezele (Marshall, Va.) put together back-to-back RBI singles to highlight the frame.

GC closed the gap to 3-2 in the third on an infield single by Isaiah Hairston and went ahead 4-3 in the fourth on a two-run shot to centerfield by Bryce Vestal. In the bottom of the fourth, the Wasps tallied three runs to retake the lead, 6-4. Senior shortstop Caleb Haynes (Covington, Va.) batted in a run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and sophomore second baseman Eli Milhorn (Bluff City, Tenn.) drove in two on the next at bat with a single to right-center.

After three scoreless innings, the Quakers trimmed the margin to 6-5 in the top of the eighth on a throwing error. Emory & Henry's offense exploded for seven runs in its half of the eighth highlighted by a grand slam by Kezele to make the score 13-5.

Wasp senior Jordan Smith (Bassett, Va.) earned the win in relief, allowing just one unearned run on two hits and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. Guilford's Joey Hegeman suffered the loss, permitting six runs on five hits and two walks in 3.1 innings.

Emory & Henry will be on the road Saturday when it visits No. 38 Randolph-Macon College for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader at noon.
