Emory & Henry Softball Tops No. 4 Christopher Newport, 10-8, In Sunday Split

EMORY, Va. – For the second day in a row, the Emory & College Softball Team (10-2) split its pair of games against Transylvania University and Christopher Newport University. The Wasps dropped a 3-1 decision to the No. 11 Pioneers in their opening contest and closed out the weekend with a 10-8 win over the No. 4 Captains. In the first game of the day, CNU defeated Transy, 8-0, in five innings.

Game Five – No. 11 Transylvania 3, Emory & Henry 1
After three scoreless innings, Transylvania got on the board in the fourth with a home run to right field by Abby Frazier. Frazier gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the sixth with a second solo shot, this time to left. Later in the inning, Transy went ahead 3-0 on Alyssa Nunn's single to left field.

Emory & Henry got a run back in the bottom of the sixth as senior pitcher Alex Braun (Lexington, S.C.) drove in junior left fielder Nicole Cox (Cedar Falls, N.C.) with a two-out double down the left field line. The Wasps had chances in the seventh but were unable to manufacture any additional runs as the Pioneers grabbed the 3-1 win.

Cece Wittry earned the win, scattering one run on six hits and one strikeout over the complete game. Braun suffered the loss, allowing just two earned runs on six hits while striking out six.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 10, No. 4 Christopher Newport 8
Emory & Henry jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a three-run home run by senior third baseman Allyson Steadman (Kingsport, Tenn.). The Captains closed the gap to 5-3 midway through the second but the Wasps put up four in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a bases-loaded single through the left side by senior shortstop Kyndall Hiatt (Ararat, Va.), to go ahead 9-3.

E&H pushed the margin to 10-3 in the third as senior first baseman Kendall Varner (Bassett, Va.) hit a towering home run down the left field line. A pair of bases-loaded walks and an infield single in the fifth got CNU within striking distance, 10-6, and the Captains trimmed the deficit even further on Taylor Yokum's two-run double to right-center in the sixth. Braun came in to pitch the final five outs, striking out a pair as she earned the save and helped Emory & Henry secure the 10-8 win.

Senior Cameron Derr (Denver, N.C.) earned the victory in the circle to go to 6-0 on the year, allowing six earned runs on three hits with nine strikeouts. CNU's Emily Weatherholtz took the loss, permitting nine runs on eight hits and two walks.

Emory & Henry will play its first road games of the year next Sunday when it opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Randolph College. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
