ODAC Players of the Week - Week 4

FOREST, Va. --- While all eight ODAC football teams were off this weekend, the rest of the ODAC fall sports saw much more action in the conference portions of their respective schedules.  Those earning weekly awards include (pictured l-r, t-b): Shelbi Holloman from Roanoke field hockey, Bruce Shober from Hampden-Sydney men's golf, Mariah Clark from Randolph-Macon volleyball, Jamie Hiegel from Bridgewater men's cross country, Kirsten McMichael from Washington and Lee women's cross country, Adam Reynolds from Lynchburg men's soccer, Emily Yergin from Shenandoah women's soccer, and Christina Herbert from Bridgewater women's golf.

ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: September 26, 2016

 

FIELD HOCKEY
Shelbi Holloman, Roanoke, Sr., Forward
Holloman, a senior from Suffolk, Va., became just the second Maroon to break the 100 career point plateau last week as she led Roanoke to a 2-1 showing. Holloman opened the week with a goal in a 5-0 win at Hood. She then helped the Maroons rebound from a 2-0 setback at Centre with a 7-1 victory at Transylvania. She scored four times and dished out an assist in that contest, becoming the first Roanoke player since 2003 to score four goals in a game. Holloman now has 102 points in her career, just 20 shy of the school record. For the season, Holloman leads the ODAC in points (25), goals scored (10), and assists (5).

MEN'S GOLF
Bruce Shober, Hampden-Sydney, Fr.
Shober, a freshman from Appomattox, Va., made the most of his second collegiate appearance by picking up his first medalist honor and leading Hampden-Sydney to the team title at the Shenandoah Invitational. Shober won the event by four strokes after posting rounds of 71 and 70 on the 6,367-yard par-71 layout at Winchester Country Club in Winchester, Va. His efforts helped the Tigers post rounds of 286 and 297 for a 15-over 583. H-SC has not shot a team round above 299 in four rounds this season.

WOMEN'S GOLF
Christina Herbert, Bridgewater, Jr.
Herbert, a junior from Williamsburg, Va., picked up her third win in as many events this season as she helped lead the Eagles to the team title at the Bridgewater Fall Invitational. She cared rounds of 74 and 71 towards a 1-over par 145 to claim medalist honors by seven strokes after 36 holes on the 5,805-yard par-72 track at Lakeview G.C. in Harrisonburg, Va. Both of her rounds proved the lowest two of any player in the tournament. Herbert's efforts helped BC to a program-record 620 after team rounds of 314 and 306. For the season, Herbert is second in NCAA Division III with a 72.0 per round scoring average.

MEN'S SOCCER
Adam Reynolds, Lynchburg, Sr., Forward
Reynolds, a senior from Wilmington, Del., helped the Hornets to a pair of victories last week that included Lynchburg's ODAC opening contest. Reynolds began his week with an assist in the Hornets 2-1 victory over nationally ninth-ranked Christopher Newport. He followed that with the game's only goal in a 1-0 victory over Hampden-Sydney to kickoff conference play. For the season, Reynolds has racked up seven points on three goals and one assist.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Emily Yergin, Shenandoah, Fr., Forward
Yergin, a freshman from Warrenton, Va., helped the Hornets to a pair of wins last week including a victory in their ODAC opener. Yergin began her week with two goals in Shenandoah's 4-0 victory at Southern Virginia. She then tallied the game's only goal in the 58th minute for a 1-0 over Washington and Lee. Yergin currently leads the ODAC in points (18) and goals scored (9). SU's #10 has scored in five straight games and in seven of Shenandoah's nine outings this season.

VOLLEYBALL
Mariah Clark, Randolph-Macon, So., Outside Hitter
Clark, a sophomore from Stuarts Draft, Va., led the Yellow Jackets to a 5-1 week that included a 3-1 showing at the Carnegie Mellon Tournament. Clark blistered her way to 90 kills on a .309 attack percentage to go with 55 digs and 12 total blocks. She accounted for 97 total points and 4.6 points per set as she averaged 4.29 kills per set. Clark registered double figure winners in all six matches, never collecting fewer than 12. She topped out at 18 kills with 13 digs in a 3-2 win over John Carroll (Ohio). She had 16 kills and 14 digs in a 3-1 loss to host, Carnegie Mellon, and finished the tournament with 15 kills, seven digs, and four blocks in a 3-0 win over Bethany (W.Va.). R-MC defeated Roanoke, 3-0, earlier in the week, with Clark smacking 15 kills to go with six digs and two blocks. She had 14 kills in a 3-0 win over Mount Union and added 12 in a 3-0 win at N.C. Wesleyan. For the season, Clark is third in the ODAC in both total kills (177) and average kills (3.59/s).

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Jamie Hiegel, Bridgewater, So.
Hiegel, a sophomore from Richmond, Va., won the Hornet Harrier/Commonwealth Challenge over the weekend, helping Bridgewater to first place in a team standings that featured several ODAC schools. Hiegel posted a six-kilometer time of 19:51.0, capturing his first collegiate championship. Bridgewater won the team trophy with just 34 points.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Kirsten McMichael, Washington and Lee, So.
McMichael, a sophomore from Eight Four, Pa., won the 2016 Shenandoah Hornet Harrier/Commonwealth Challenge on Saturday at the Kernstown Battlefield. McMichael crossed the finish line of the five-kilometer race in 19:57.40 to take the top spot out of 87 competitors. She beat the second-place runner. This marked the first collegiate win for McMichael.
