Guilford Takes 5-0 Victory over Brevard in Season Opener

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women's soccer team (0-1) fell in its first contest of the 2022 season to Guilford College (1-0), 5-0, on Thursday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

The Quakers used a four-goal surge in the second half to claim the shutout victory over the Tornados.

Abby Mayer led the Tornados with three shots in her Tornado debut. Veteran forward Alyssa Hetherington took a pair of shot attempts, while Taylor Richardson and Emma White also registered attempts at goal.

Mackenzie Lozano (0-1) made four saves in her collegiate debut in goal for the Tornados.

Guilford outshot the Tornados 14-7 and controlled six corner kicks to Brevard's three.

The Quakers got the scoring going early, finding the back of the net in the seventh minute when Olivia Santos found Sarah Hall to put Guilford up 1-0. However, the Tornado defense was able to hold Guilford scoreless through the remainder of the first half.

Guilford doubled its advantage with a 49th-minute goal from Madison Green before Baylee Greenwood made it 3-0 with an unassisted goal in the 60th minute. Hall found the back of the net for the second time in the game in the 68th minute before Jenna Shotton put in a penalty kick in the 76th minute, effectively putting the match away as the Quakers wrapped up their season-opening win, 5-0.

The Tornados return to action on the road this weekend with a trip to Bluefield, West Virginia to take on Bluefield University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
