RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Softball Team split their Day 2 games at the Triangle Classic in the Raleigh area on Sunday afternoon. Wesleyan first fell to nationally ranked Rowan University (N.J.) 4-3 in 8 innings in their first game before coming back to defeat Randolph College (Va.) 6-5 in the late game Sunday.

ROWAN 4, NCWC 3

A Nichole Mooney RBI single tied the game at 1 after three innings scoring sophomore LF Rylee Wheeler. After Rowan took a 3-1 lead in the 5th, the Bishops came back with one run each in the 6th and 7th innings to send the game to extras tied at 3. Pinch-hitter Summer Phillips made it 3-2 in the 6th on an RBI single before catcher Kayla Molivas then drove in SS Meredith Mize with a single in the 7th to tie it.

Unfortunately, Rowan would win the game in the 8th scoring off junior starter Beth Braswell with one out. Braswell finished the game throwing 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits with a walk and 6 strikeouts.

Wesleyan out-hit Rowan 8-5 overall led by a multi-hit game from Mooney in CF while Braswell led the way with the lone extra-base hit, a double. Mize also had a single, stolen base, and a run scored.

NCWC 6, RANDOLPH 5

After falling behind 4-0 in the 1st inning to Randolph College on Sunday, the Lady Bishops rallied back with four runs of their own in the bottom half. It began with a Mize RBI double that scored Mooney which was followed by a Braswell two-run homer that made it 4-3. An RBI groundout then tied it at 4. An RBI walk in the 2nd from Kayla Hawley then scored Mize giving the Bishops the lead before a Braswell rbi single in the third scored Emily DeAngelis giving the Bishops an important insurance run.

Randolph (3-5) would scratch across a single run in the 4th off Bishop starter Grace Preston, but that would be all they would muster the rest of the game as Braswell came on in relief in the 5th to shut down the Wildcats for the remainder of the game. Braswell did not allow a hit over her 3 scoreless innings while striking out four. Preston got the win improving to 3-1 as she allowed 4 hits and only 3 earned runs over 4 innings.

Also recording extra-base hits in the game were Mize with her two doubles while Mooney also knocked a double and stole a base as Wesleyan outhit the Wildcats 8-4.

The Bishops improve to 5-3 on the season and will next be in action on Tuesday when they head on the road to face VA Wesleyan in a 1:30 PM DH.
