2017-18 Golf Players of the Week

  • Kevin Duffy, Virginia Wesleyan, Sr.
    April 16, 2018
    Duffy, a senior from Suwanee, Ga., put together a pair of top-four finishes this past week, including his first collegiate medal. Duffy won the Marlin Invitational at Sleep Hole Golf Course in Suffolk, Va. Duffy carded a 2-over 74 on day one before wrapping up with an even-par 72 for a 2-over 146. His efforts helped the Marlins to the team title at 28-over 604. Earlier in the week, Duffy tied for fourth overall at the Glenn Heath Memorial hosted by The Apprentice School. He finished just three shots backs of winner Doc Schulte from Shenandoah at 9-over par 153 following rounds of 76 and 77 and the par 72 track at the Williamsburg Club. His efforts, along with second-place finisher Carter Morgan, helped VWU to first in the team standings at 40-over 616 (315-301).
  • Amanda Kelley, Bridgewater, Jr.
    April 16, 2018
    Kelley, a junior from Newport News, Va., registered her first collegiate medal by winning the Marlins Invitational over the weekend. Kelley, who had been working on some personal swing changes, carded rounds of 83 and 81 at Sleep Hole Golf Course in Suffolk, Va., for a 20-over 164. She finished four strokes clear of Virginia Wesleyan's Maggie Kingora for the title.

    Irby, a senior from Clover, Va., put together a strong week thru a pair of events for the Hornets. Irby opened by tying for fourth at the Lynchburg Invitational. He opened with a 3-over 75 on the par-72 track set to 7,009 yards at Poplar Grove Golf Club. He followed with a 2-over 74 to finish three shots off the pace at 5-over 149. His efforts helped Lynchburg to fourth in the team standings at 45-over 621 (305-316). Irby then participated in all four of Lynchburg's matches at the Division III Match Play Invitational. Irby went 3-1 for the event, including a triumph over top-rated (by Golfstat.com) James Mishoe from Guilford, 3&2, in the first round. After falling in the quarterfinal round to Hampden-Sydney's Parker Smith, Irby rebounded for a 1-up win over Chris Harris from Rhodes. He finished with a 3&2 win over David Dattilo from Mt. St. Joseph. Irby's efforts helped Lynchburg go 2-2 as a team in the largest recorded college match play event. The Hornets fell to Guilford (3-2-0) in the first round and Hampden-Sydney (4-1-0) in round two, but recovered for wins over Rhodes (3-2-0) and Mt. St. Joe's (5-0-0) in the final two rounds.

    Kingora, a sophomore from Sterling, Va., picked up a pair of medalist honors at one day events hosted by Hollins University. Kingora posted a 16-over 88 to win by seven strokes at the Hollins Invitational on Friday at the Roanoke Country Club set to 5,801 yards and a par of 72. She came back two days later to win the Hollins Classic at Hunting Hills Country Club. She carred an 11-over 83 on the par 72 track set at 5,802 yards to win by 12 strokes. Teammate Hannah Turner finished second in both events. Kingora currently owns an 85.9 per round average thru 13.5 total rounds, which is 10th-best in the ODAC.
  • Josh Hill, Guilford, Jr.

    Hill, a junior from Superior, Colo., picked up his second collegaite medalist title after winning the West Cup and helping Guilford to the team title last week. It is the first time a team from the East Coast has won the West Cup. Hill finished one stroke better than Cade Lawson from Redlands and Slate Sivage from California Lutheran after three rounds on the par-71 layout set to 6,403 yards at the Sierra La Verne Country Club. The field off 85 men featured 18 of the top-100 players in Golfstat's Division III rankings. Hill opened with an even par 71 before posting a 3-over 74 in round two. He recovered for a second 71 in the final round, making his 35th par for the tournament on the 54th hole to wrap up the victory. For Guilford, the 891 (299-301-297) finish atop the leaderboard marked the squad's fourth win of the season. They are currently ranked #5 in the country by the Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll. Hill is second in the ODAC with a 73.1 per round average.
  • Mary-Frances Hall, Washington and Lee, Sr.

    Hall, a senior from State Road, N.C., put her best foot forward of the spring at the competitive UC-Santa Cruz Spring Invitational last week, finishing as the runner-up and helping Washington and Lee to second of nine teams. Hall carded an opening round 78 on the par-72 layout set to 5,830 yards at the Pacific Grove Golf Links. That put her six shots back of leader Kayle Hunn from nationally top-ranked George Fox University. Hall picked up four strokes on Hunn with a second round 74, leaving her as runner up to Hunn by two strokes at 8-over par 152. The Generals, ranked 11th by Golfstat, finished 10 shots back for GFU in second place at 50-over 626 (315-311). Hall is second in the ODAC with a 76.8 per round average.
  • Jakob Keidel, Virginia Wesleyan, Fr.

    Keidel, a freshman from Salisbury, Md., tied four eighth out of 75 players in the Gold Championship at the Marine Federal Credit Union Invitational hosted by Camp Lejeune. Keidel fired a 2-under 68 in round one, helping Virginia Wesleyan shoot the lowest team round in school at 283 (+3). He finished with a 2-over 74 on day two to chime in at even-par 142 and four shots of the eventual winner from Oglethorpe University. The Marlins finished fourth as a team at 9-over 577 (283-294). Keidel owns a 77.2 average thru 13 rounds of competition.

    Mishoe, a sophomore from Cary, N.C., has made an immediate impact after transferring from UNC-Greensboro in January. Mishoe completed a wire-to-wire victory at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational over the weekend, posting a 10-under par 206 over three rounds at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Jekyll Island, Ga. He carded a 5-under 67 in round one powered by five birdies and a pair of eagles. He was 1-over par for his round heading to 520-yard 15th hole, but eagled the par five to set off his eagle-eagle-birdie-birdie finish. Mishoe posted eight birdies in round two, but three bogeys and a triple on his ninth hole of the day left him with a 2-under 70. His final round featured fewer ebbs and flows with five birdies towards a 3-under 69. His efforts helped Guilford to second place in the team standings at even-par 864 (294-286-284) behind champion Methodist University (853).

    Herbert, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., continued her trend of top-10 finishes as she placed in a tie for 8th at the Jekyll Island Collegiate. Herbert has now finished inside the top-10 in all seven events she has played this season. The reigning national champion opened with a pair of 77's over the first 36 holes, but then improved by three strokes for a 2-over 74 on the Indian Mound Course at Jekyll Island Golf Club. That put her at 12-over 228, 14 shots off the winning pace by Whitman College's Phoebe Nguyen. Herbert continues to lead the ODAC in scoring average at 73.8 strokes per round.

    Puleo, a sophomore from Albany, N.Y., put together the best round of the week for an ODAC player. At the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate, Puleo posted a 1-under 71 in the rain-shortened event. That tied for fifth among 102 players in a deep field. He helped Washington and Lee to sixth in the team standings at 8-over 296. Puleo's season average now sits at 73.8 thru nine rounds.
  • Christina Herbert, Bridgewater, Sr.
    March 12, 2018
    Herbert, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., opened the spring season with her sixth top-five finish in as many starts when combined with the fall slate of outings. Herbert finished in a tie for fourth at the Hilton Head Lakes Invitational at 4-over 148, just two shots off the pace. She was the top NCAA Division III athlete in the field of largely Division II competitors. Herbert opened with an even-par 72 before closing with a 4-over 76. Her efforts helped Bridgewater to a tie for sixth in the team standings at 673 (329-344).

    October 30, 2017
    Farley, a senior from Durham, N.C., put together a consistent effort in leading Washington and Lee at the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial. Farley tied for fourth overall after two rounds at the Sedgefield Dye Course in Greensboro, which was set to a par of 71 at 6,822 yards. He opened with a 2-over 73 before bettering his effort by one with a 1-over 72 to finish six strokes off the lead at 3-over par 145. Washington and Lee finished fifth of 19 teams at 21-over 589. The Generals second round score of 286 was the third-lowest team total after a pair of 283's by Carnegie Mellon and Greensboro.
  • Jacob Laughlin, Virginia Wesleyan, So.
    October 23, 2017
    Laughlin, a sophomore from McGaheysville, Va., put together a strong showing at the Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Intercollegiate. Laughlin finished in a tie for third at 2-over 144 following two rounds on the par 71 layout set to 6,750 yards at Stonehenge Golf & Country Club in Richmond, Va. He opened with a 1-under 70 before closing at 3-over 74 to tie seven off the pace with Mary Washington's Sebastian Bonte. Laughlin's efforts helped Virginia Wesleyan claim the team title by three strokes over UMW at 24-over 592 (289-303). For the season, Laughlin owns a 76.2 scoring average with this marking his first top-five showing of the season.
  • Mary-Frances Hall, Washington and Lee, Sr.

    Hall, a senior from State Road, N.C., was outstanding at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational as she tied for medalist honors after three rounds at the Baytowne Golf Club in Sandestin, Fla. After shooting a 6-over 78 in the opening round on the par 72 layout set at 5,838 yards, Hall carded back-to-back 1-over rounds of 73 to finish in a first-place tie with Samantha Haubenstock of Washington (Mo.) at 8-over 224. For Hall, it was her fourth career victory and first since claiming the 2016 ODAC Championship. Her efforts helped Washington and Lee to fifth (954) in the team standings. On the season, Hall finished has finished in the top-five of all three tournaments she has played this fall. She owns a 75.57 scoring average across seven rounds.
  • Carter Morgan, Virginia Wesleyan, So.
    October 16, 2017
    Morgan, a sophomore from Tappahannock, Va., was the top ODAC finisher at the Ted Keller Memorial as he tied for fifth overall. Morgan fired rounds of 76 and 73 to finish at 9-over 149 on the par 70 layout set to 6,624 yards at Hanover Country Club. His efforts helped Virginia Wesleyan to third in the team standings at 603 (301-302), the best of five ODAC teams in action.
  • Liza Lewis, Randolph-Macon, Jr.
    October 16, 2017
    Lewis, a junior from Richmond, Va., enjoyed a strong tournament at the Revolutionary Collegiate Classic as she earned individual medalist honors following two rounds at Patriots Glen National Golf Club in Elkton, Md. Lewis won the even by six strokes over teammate Emmy Saathoff. She opened with a 6-over 78 before posting an 81 in round two, the best of the second round, to bring her final total to 15-over 159 on the par 72 layout set at 6,035 yards. Lewis helped Randolph-Macon to first in the team standings at 656 (321-335).
  • Brian Peccie, Washington and Lee, So.

    Peccie, a sophomore from Norfolk, Va., helped Washington and Lee to sixth place in a tough national field at the Gordin Collegiate Classic. Peccie finished in a tie for third at 2-over 215 after three rounds on the par 71 layout set at 6,562 at the Delaware Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio. He opened with a 3-over 74 before nearly erasing that with a 2-under 69 in round two. He finished his tournament with a 1-over 72 to tie with three other golfers four shots off the lead in a field of 60 players. Peccie, who owns a team-best 72.5 scoring average, helped W&L to a 33-over 885 team total with rounds of 300, 296, and 297.

    Herbert, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., won her third straight tournament by claiming individual medalist honors by 10 strokes at the Generals' Invitational. Herbert carded rounds of 73 and 69 on the way to a 2-under par 142 after two rounds on the par 72 layout set at 5,801 yards at the Lexington Golf & Country Club. She rolled home seven birdies in the final round, which helped lower her season average to a NCAA Division III-best 72.13. Her efforts helped Bridgewater to fifth (333-320--653) of 13 squads in the team standings.

    Evens, a sophomore from Mercer Island, Wash., picked a great time to earn his first collegiate individual medal as he topped the field at the Tournament Town Preview. The event, which featured the top finishers from the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships in addition to select regional teams, was competed at Grandover Resort as an early prelude to the 2018 national championships, which the Greensboro-based venue will host in May. Evens birdied the 18th hole in his final round to finish one stroke clear of a trio of competitors following three rounds of play. He opened with a 4-under 68 on the par-72 layout set at 6,730 yards. The course lengthened to just over 7,000 yards for the final two rounds, with Evens carding scores of 74 and 73 to finish at 1-under 215, making him the only play to finish under par for the tournament. His efforts helped tournament-host Guilford finish ninth overall (897) in the team standings. Evens has finished in the top-five in each of his three starts this fall.

    Smith, a freshman from Durham, N.C., helped lead the Tigers to the team title at the Shenandoah Invitational last week. Smith won individual medalist honors with a 3-under 139 following two rounds at the Winchester Country Club, which was set to par 71 at 6,367 yards. He opened with a 6-under 65, the lowest individual round for any ODAC player this season. He followed up with a 3-over 74 to win by one stroke over teammate Parker Smith (no relation). Smith's efforts helped H-SC post team rounds of 288 and 292 for a 12-over 580 total and an 18 stroke victory over second place Mary Washington. For the season, Smith is tied for fifth in the ODAC with a 72.0 per round average.

    Herbert, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., earns her third straight weekly honor after winning individual medalist honor for the second time this season. In three overall starts, the 2017 NCAA Division III national champion has one runner-up and two event victories. She has won five of her last six events -- including the national championship -- dating back to last season. This past weekend, Herbert won the Bridgewater Invitational by 10 strokes over Allessandra Bertacche from Marymount (Va.). Herbert opened with an even-par 72 before posting a 2-under 70 for a 142 following two rounds at Lakeview Golf Club, which was set par-72 at 5,805 yards. Her efforts helped Bridgewater wrap up the team title at 47-over 623 that included a team-record 304 in the second round. For the season, Herbert leads the ODAC with a 72.5 per round average.

    Hill, a junior from Superior, Colo., led a record-setting performance by the Quakers at the Tom Kinder Memorial. Hill finished in second place with a career-low 136 for 8-under-par following two rounds on the par-72 track set to 6,769 yards at Lakeview Golf Club. Hill opened with a 5-under 67, establishing a new personal career-best round. He posted a 3-under 69 in round two to post the fourth-lowest individual two-round total in school history and finish four strokes back of individual medalist Lance Keiser from Ferrum. Hill's 136 helped Guilford to a tournament- and school-record 16-under 560 team total, securing the second team title in as many starts for the Quakers this season. GC's opening round 276 is the fifth-lowest in program history.

    Herbert, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., picks up her second weekly award in as many opportunities after winning the Green Turtle/Shenandoah Invitational over the weekend. Herbert finished at even-par 144 after two rounds on the par-72 layout set to 5,862 yards at the Shenandoah Valley Golf Club. Herbert opened with a 2-under 70 before capping her tournament with a 2-over 74. Both rounds were lowest of the tournament and helped her post a 12-stroke victory over the next closest competitor. Her efforts helped Bridgewater to the team title (663) by 17 strokes over Christopher Newport.

    Evens, a sophomore from Mercer Island, Wash., helped the Quakers open the season with a team championship at the Transylvania Invitational. Evens paced Guilford with a 4-under par 140 to finish fourth overall in the 82-man field at the University Club of Kentucky. He opened with a career-low round of 67, following that up with a 73 in round. Guilford posted a 570 (282-288) team score over two rounds on the par-72 track set at 7,013 yards. That total is the sixth lowest in school history and the squad's best mark since 2010.

    Herbert, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., opened her NCAA Division III national title defense with a strong showing at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational, hosted by Wittenberg University. She finished as the individual runner-up, one stroke off the lead after two rounds on the par-71 layout set at 5,824 yards. Herbert and eventual winner, Jane Hopkinson-Wood from Wittenberg, matched each other with opening round 75's. The difference came in the final round, where Herbert posted a 74 against Hopkinson-Wood's 73. Herbert's efforts helped Bridgewater to sixth in the team standings at 684 (343-341).
