Roanoke fell in overtime 3-2

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 2 | Mary Washington 3 (OT)

Records: Maroons 0-1 | Eagles 1-0
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: After having to postpone their game with Mary Washington due to Hurricane Ida, the Roanoke College field hockey team welcomed the Eagles to Kerr Stadium on Thursday afternoon. The Maroons would strike first, netting the first two scores of the afternoon. However, a Mary Washington rally tied the game with less than two minutes to play and got the game winner early in the extra frame for the 3-2 win.

Highlights:

  • Despite being outshot, 7-2 in the opening quarter and then again, 3-1, in the second, the game would go into the half with a scoreless tie.
  • The Roanoke defense would limit their guests to just a pair of shots in the third as the offense began to get on track. Just over nine minutes into the second half, Emilee Wooten would break the tie when she scored the game's first goal off a Hope Keller feed.
  • A minute and half later, Wooten made it 2-0 Maroons off a pass from Martha Hurley.
  • In goal, Hannah Roerden was under attack all game long as the Eagles would take a total 21 shots. Roerden registered five saves in the first half and six through three quarters.
  • Roanoke would hold the two-goal edge until the final eight minutes when Mary Washington finally found the back of the cage. With 1:37 left on the clock, the Eagles would get the equalizer on their eighth penalty quarter of the contest.
  • In overtime, Emma Bernard would score her third goal of the game to give the Eagles the 3-2 win.
  • Roerden finished with seven saves and was aided by her defensive teammates for two more stops. Mary Wisher and Alexis Wright each recorded a defensive save for the Maroons.

Up next: Roanoke will next be in action 10 days from today when they play host to Christopher Newport on Sunday, September 12th. The game with the Captains is scheduled for 11:00am.
