The Short Story: The Roanoke College field hockey team scored twice in each of the first three quarters and kept Virginia Wesleyan off the board as the Maroons extended their program-best win streak to nine games with a 6-0 shutout on Saturday in Virginia Beach.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hope Keller scored what would be the game-winner at 8:59 of the first quarter, unassisted to put the Maroons on the scoreboard first.
  • Saige Bullock scored off a pass from Grace Vernarelli with less than a minute left in the period to put the Maroons ahead 2-0 after one quarter.
  • Just over a minute into the second quarter, Martha Hurley scored unassisted to put the Maroons ahead 3-0.
  • At 20:25 it was Vernarelli's turn to add to Roanoke's goal total with an unassisted goal at 20:25, giving the Maroons a 4-0 lead going into halftime.
  • Hurley would add two goals in the third period, both unassisted, to complete the hat trick at 40:19 and 41:14.
  • It became a defensive battle in the final period with neither team finding the back of the cage as the Maroons held on for the 6-0 shutout win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Maroons fired a total of 22 shots in the game without allowing the Marlins to take even one.
  • Roanoke also led in penalty corners 16-6.
  • Madison Wingerter played all 60 minutes in the cage and improved to 9-2 on the season.
