The Basics
Score: Roanoke 61 | Greensboro 67
Records: Maroons 0-1 | Pride 3-5
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The Roanoke College men's basketball team opened the 2020-21 campaign with a home game against Greensboro College. Nine lead changes and eight ties later, it would be the Pride that came away with the hard fought 67-61 victory.

How it Happened:

  • The Maroons would win the opening tip and on consecutive baskets by Efosa Edosomwan and Tripp Greene, Roanoke enjoyed the early lead.
  • The lead would stay in favor of the Maroons until Keyshawn Dorsey hit his only three-pointer of the night to give Greensboro its first advantage.
  • Three Trent Dawson free throws tied the score at 13-13 and the game would stay that way until the 11 minute mark of the first half.
  • The lead would go back and forth, with the Maroons trailing by just a single point, 31-32, after another pair of Dawson free throws. But, neither team would score the final 1:30 of the frame and the Pride took the one point lead into the break.
  • Greensboro came out hot in the second half, scoring the first eight and 10 of the first 12 points of the period.
  • Kevon Meertins scored to give the Pride their largest lead of the night, 47-37, less than four minutes into the half.
  • Roanoke would mount a rally and after an Ethan Rohan dunk they had pulled to within one, 48-49 with just over 12 minutes left to play.
  • However, Greensboro would answer on their own 8-0 run over after a Dawson layup gave Roanoke a brief advantage.
  • RC wasn't done and another Greene triple pulled the Maroons back to with a bucket, but the visitors closed the game on a 8-3 surge to pick up the win in the Maroon's debut.
  • Edosomwan finished with 16 and nine rebounds while Greene and freshman Justin Kuthan each added 11. Dawson played more than 33 minutes in his collegiate debut and finished with nine points and eight assists.
  • Greyson Collins lead the Pride with 23 points and Meertins added 19.

Up next: Roanoke will look to rebound in their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener on Saturday when they play host to their arch rivals from Hampden-Sydney. The game is set to tip at 2:00pm.
