The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team and Pfeiffer went to extra innings on Wednesday evening before the Falcons scored in the bottom of the 10th to escape with a 16-15 win over the Maroons in non-conference action.

Highlights:

  • Both teams got on the scoreboard early with the Maroons getting a two-run home run from Conner Butler that scored Justyn Steens in the top of the first. The Falcons answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to tie it up at 2-2.
  • It wasn't until the top of the fourth before either team got someone to round the bases. Noah Basham led off with a walk and Liam Murphy singled to left field to put runners on first and second. Then with two outs, Jack Fehlner launched a home run over the wall down the left-field line to score three runs and put the Maroons ahead 5-2.
  • Roanoke extended its lead with two more runs in the top of the fifth off the bats of Nate Chown and L. Murphy. Pfeiffer responded with two of their own in the inning, as the Maroons led 8-4 after five.
  • The sixth inning saw Roanoke add three more runs with Butler's second home run of the game and an RBI single by Mason Staz. A Jonny Wall double in the top of the seventh that scored Fehlner saw the Maroons lead 12-4 going into the bottom of the seventh. The bottom of the inning was not kind to Roanoke as the Falcons scored nine runs on six hits that saw Pfeiffer take the lead 13-12 after seven complete.
  • Roanoke would tie the score up in the eighth with a Jacob Bonzon sacrifice bunt.
  • The ninth saw the Maroons score their fourth home run of the game, this one off the bat of Wall before an Owen Lawn double scored Butler to put the Maroons ahead 15-13. Once again Pfeiffer answered back with two runs of their own to send the game into extra innings.
  • A deep single to left in the bottom of the 10th pushed a Falcon run across the plate for the 16-15 win over the Maroons.

Up next: Roanoke closes out the regular season with an ODAC doubleheader against Randolph-Macon on Saturday, April 29. First pitch with the Yellow Jackets is scheduled for 2 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, the Maroons will host a Senior Day presentation for their seniors.
