Roanoke Splits Pair With Yellow Jackets

The Lead: Roanoke College hosted Randolph-Macon on Sunday afternoon with first place on the line in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) standings. The game was tied after nine innings as game one headed into extra innings. RMC got a pair of runs in the top of the 11th for the 7-5 win. Game two belonged to the Maroons as they scored two early runs and a four spot in the sixth appeared to put the game away.  A Yellow Jackets rally would cut the lead in half but Roanoke recorded the final six outs for the 6-3 win.

How it Happened:

  • Two Yellow Jacket runs in the first would see the road team take an early advantage. In the bottom half, Mason Staz doubled to drive in Will Smith to make it a one-run game.
  • A Cale Agee SAC bunt would tie the score when Will Merriken crossed home plate.
  • Randolph-Macon would once again pull ahead before a Carter Plunkett home run made it 4-3 Maroons after five innings of play.
  • Two unearned RMC runs gave the Yellow Jackets a late lead. However, Conner Butler delivered an RBI base hit in the bottom of the eighth and the game would head to extra innings.
  • Randolph-Macon scored two runs in the top of the 11th to seal the game one win for the top ranked Yellow Jackets, 7-5.
  • Butler was 3-5 and Plunkett delivered a pair of RBI.

How it Happened:

  • A Plunkett single in the bottom of the first would bring home Smith for a 1-0 lead. One inning later, Gavin Kandrick delivered an RBI base hit that scored Jonny Wall to make it 2-0.
  • The bottom of the sixth would see Roanoke break open the game with four runs. Plunkett drove in Tyler De Meo before a Butler double plated Plunkett and Merriken. Wall drove home Butler and Roanoke had a 6-0 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets wouldn't go quietly and after a two-run home run and fielder's choice, the Roanoke lead was cut in half, 6-3.
  • Will Turner went seven innings for the win, giving up nine hits and two runs. Kevin Ledford got the final six outs with two strikeouts.
  • Wall was 2-2 with a run and RBI while Plunkett was 2-3 with a run and two RBI.

Up Next: Roanoke will wrap up the home portion of their regular season on Tuesday when they host Guilford College for a mid-week game against the Quakers.
