The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team came from behind in their home opener to win 8-3 over the visiting Greensboro Pride at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

Highlights:

  • It didn't take long for the Maroons to get on the scoreboard against the Pride. With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Jonny Wall hit a single down the left field line and was followed up with an Owen Lawn double to right field that allowed Wall to come around from first to give Roanoke a 1-0 lead.
  • A pair of walks and back-to-back hits allowed three Pride runners to score as Greensboro took the lead 3-1 after the top of the second.
  • Both teams got out of some tough spots in the third through the top of the seventh innings as neither team could score. However, in the bottom of the seventh, the Maroons got a two-run, five-run rally. A walk to Wall and Carson McCusker was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. A full-count illegal pitch/balk loaded the bases. and Caleb Grizzard singled through the right side before advancing to second a misplay in right field with two runs scoring on the play, tying the score at 3-3. Mason Staz followed up with a single that scored another two runs as the Maroons retook the lead 5-3. After M.Staz stole second and reached third, Spencer Rhoads got the third Roanoke hit of the inning, up the middle that scored Staz and gave the Maroons the 6-3 after seven complete.
  • A single by Jacob Bonzon and a throwing error to start the bottom of the eighth for Roanoke was followed by a Pride error in left field as the ball dropped out of his glove just inside fair territory that allowed Ty Staz to reach second and Bonzon to score. Wall followed that up with a single to left center that T. Staz was able to come around and score on giving the Maroons an 8-3 going into the ninth.
  • The Maroons induced a flyout to left, a ground out to second base and Trevor Orth struck out looking the final batter to give Roanoke its first win of the season, 8-3.

Up next: Due to the impending weather forecast on Saturday, the Maroons have moved up their double-header with Dickinson to Friday, February 24. The two teams will now play two, seven-inning games beginning at 2 p.m. at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
