Eight-Run First Inning Lifts Maroons Over Pfeiffer, 12-4

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 12, Pfeiffer 4
Records:  Maroons 10-8; Falcons 3-9
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Eight runs in the bottom of the first was all the offense the Roanoke baseball team would need as the Maroons took a 12-4 win over visiting Pfeiffer on Tuesday afternoon at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

Highlights:

  • Pfeiffer scored first in the top of the first off a double and a single up the middle to stake a 1-0 lead on the Maroons. But the lead did not last long.
  • All the Maroons were missing in the bottom of the first was a home run as Roanoke would hit a single, a double, and a triple to take a lead they would not give up. Jacob Bonzon led off with a walk and then stole second. Mason Staz would follow with a single through the right side, allowing Bozon to tie the score at 1-1. Staz would reach third on a flyout to center before the Maroons would collect five straight hits. Conner Butler singled up the middle, scoring Staz. Owen Lawn doubled to right center, scoring Butler. Carson McCusker singled to right center, scoring Lawn. Jack Carpin collected his first hit of the season with a triple to right center, allowing McCusker to score. Spencer Rhoads closed out the hit streak with a single to left that sent Carpin home. Bonzon came back up to the plate and was hit by a pitch to lead the bases once again. Staz followed in his footsteps by collecting an RBI when he was hit by a pitch scoring Rhoads from third. Jonny Wall flew out to left for a sacrifice fly that allowed Justyn Steens to give the Maroons an 8-1 lead after just one inning.
  • The Falcons looked like they were on the cusp of coming back after they score three runs in the top of the second to pull within four at 8-4.
  • However, the Maroons would get two of those runs back in the bottom of the third on a two-RBI single to right from Staz putting Roanoke's lead back at six, 10-4. The Maroons went on to add a single run in both the fifth and sixth inning before both teams settled in defensively as Roanoke held on for the 12-4 midweek win.
  • Staz finished the game with four RBI, two hits, and two runs scored. Nine different Maroons tallied a hit against Pfeiffer.
  • Brandon Hill got his first win of the season by pitching 3.2 innings in relief, striking out four.

Up next: Roanoke is back at it tomorrow, Tuesday, March 22 when it hits the road for a single ODAC contest against conference newcomer Averett in Danville. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
