Maroons Split 7-Inning Doubleheader With Dickinson on Butler's Walk-Off Single

The Lead: After Dickinson tied the score in the fifth inning, the Roanoke baseball team got a walk-off RBI single by Conner Butler in the bottom of the seventh to score Nate Chown from second for the 4-3 win.

Highlights:

  • It took until the third inning for both teams to find their way to the scoreboard with the Red Devils scoring a runner from third with no outs on a double play to put them ahead 1-0. The Maroons responded in the bottom half of the inning when Butler hit a double down the right-field line that scored both Ty Staz and Chown to put Roanoke ahead 2-1. Jonny Wall followed up with a double to left center, trading places with Chown and giving the Maroons a 3-1 lead.
  • The fifth inning saw Dickinson lead off with a single before Kaden Sigmon hit a home run over the right-center field fence to tie the score up at 3-3.
  • Roanoke led off the bottom of the seventh with a line out and ground out before Chown induced a walk. A single by Staz put runners on first and second with two outs. Butler then hit a single to center that Chown beat a throw attempt by several steps giving the Maroons the 4-3 walk-off win in game one of the doubleheader.

Highlights:

  • The Red Devils got on the scoreboard first with four runs in the top of the second off a single, double, and triple to give them a 4-0 lead. Roanoke responded after putting runners on first and second with two outs. Staz hit a hard single towards first that Corey Coogan raced around from second to score on, cutting the lead down to 4-1.
  • The third inning saw Jacob Bonzon get hit by a pitch and stole second before Coogan hit a double off the wall in right field allowing Bonzon to score cutting the lead in half, 4-2.
  • Dickinson responded in their next half inning with a trio of runs putting their lead up to five runs, 7-2.
  • With one out Roanoke got two straight singles by Coogan and Nate Prince, putting runners on first and third. George Gustafson hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Coogan. A Red Devil error then allowed Brady Ivory to reach first and Prince to score putting the DC lead at 7-4. Staz would reach on a second Dickinson error of the inning that Jack Fehlner scored on, cutting the lead to just two, 7-5.
  • The Red Devils added three runs in the top of the seventh and kept Roanoke off the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning to split the doubleheader, 10-7.
