The Lead: The No. 19 Roanoke women's lacrosse team was not at the beach for vacation as the Maroons picked up a 21-3 win over the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins on Saturday afternoon in Virginia Beach.

Highlights:

  • The first quarter was all Maroons with Grace Koutouzis and Nicole Harrison each scoring unassisted goals in the first two and half minutes of the game. A single Marlins goal at 11:32 was answered with five Roanoke goals to close out the first period of play. Sydney Harrison, Lilly Blair (2x), and Tiernan Connor (2x) scored in the Roanoke run.
  • The Marlins led off the second quarter with a goal in the first minute before Roanoke went on another 6-0 run to jump out to a 13-2 lead with 5:48 left before a the break. VWU stopped the run with a goal at 3:15 before Tracey Benzing took a pass from Blair with five seconds left to give the Maroons a 14-3 lead at the break.
  • The Roanoke defense took over the second half, preventing the Marlins from finding the back of the cage as Kyleigh Chickering made a pair of saves in cage. At the same time Roanoke added five more goals in the third quarter and a pair in the fourth to reach 20+ goals for the third time this season. 
  • Blair finished the game with a game-high four goals and two assists while winning eight draw controls and grabbing a groundballs and forcing one caused turnover.
  • Chickering played all 60 minutes in the cage making three saves to earn her eighth win of the season.
