Roanoke Starts Weekend With Two Wins

The Lead: Roanoke College hosted the 2022 Mountain Mash softball tournament at the James Moyer Complex Friday and Saturday. Roanoke would play host to Fredonia State in their first game while taking on Oneonta in the nightcap. The Maroons would score four in the first inning on their way to a 9-0, 5-inning, win over the Blue Devils. In game two, Roanoke once again used a big first inning, five runs, to seize control and pick up the five-inning win, 13-1.  

Highlights:

  • Meri Bostic walked and stole second before scoring on a Jordyn DiFava double. Shanan Hester launched a bomb to straight away center field for a 2-run homer to make it 3-0. Riley Croghan added a two-out single to plate Meagen Evans to stake the Maroons to a 4-0 lead.
  • In the third, Rachel Sirbaugh walked and advanced on a Jada Karnes base hit while a Makayla Austin infield hit would load the bases. Croghan added two more RBI on a base hit to left. After a sacrifice bunt, Bostic made it 8-0 with a deep single and would score on another Hester RBI.
  • Karnes picked up her third win in as many starts by pitching five innings, giving up just one hit and adding eight strikeouts to bring her season total to 25.
  • Hester, Bostic, and Croghan were each 2-3 and the trio combined for four runs and eight RBI.

Highlights:

  • Roanoke would once again open the game with a big first frame. Madison Courts singled and moved to third on another Hester base hit. Serenity Bishop reached on an error with Courts scoring. A Kate Houle double would make it 2-0 with runners on second and third. Lilly Burns doubled off the right center fence to pick up two RBI and later score to make it 5-0.
  • After giving up a run, Courts and Hester singled to start the second inning. Bishop sent a double to the gap for her second and third RBI of the evening. Katelyn Craghead sent Bishop home with a SAC fly. After a stolen base and walk, the bases were loaded for Morgan Clark. Clark singled to center to score a pair. Courts walked to reload the bases and Hester got an RBI by being hit by a pitch.
  • Lauryn Chappell singled to add to the lead in the third and in the fourth inning, Hester blasted a triple to left to complete the scoring.
  • Lindsay Gedro got the win with three innings, yielding five hits, one run, and four strikeouts before giving way to Lauren Hoffman, who pitched two scoreless innings.
  • Hester was 3-3 with two runs and two RBI. Bishop, Courts, and Clark combined to go 6-9 with five runs and five RBI.
  • In the Maroons 6-0 start they have outscored their opponents 60-4.
