The Lead: A rain delay to start the game didn't put a damper on the Roanoke baseball team as they took down Averett in a midweek ODAC contest, 5-2, in Danville on Wednesday.

Highlights:

  • After about a 20-minute rain delay to start, Jacob Bonzon led off with a single through the left side in the first. Two batters later and Jonny Wall also hit a single through the left side that allowed Bonzon to score from second to put the Maroons ahead 1-0.
  • It was a while before another run was added to the scoreboard with Roanoke adding a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Owen Lawn led off the inning with a walk and Carson McCusker followed with a single to center. Two batters and two outs later, Nate Prince singled to deep left that allowed both Lawn and McCusker to score. The Cougars answered right away in their half of the inning, matching the two runs to cut the lead back to just one run at 3-2 heading into the eighth.
  • Bonzon would score his second run of the game off a Wall triple to left to extend the Maroons' lead back to two runs at 4-2. Roanoke added one more insurance run in the top of the ninth when Caleb Grizzard singled to left that Corey Coogan scored on; providing the final margin of victory, 5-2.
  • Jackson Murphy secured his first win of the season pitching the first seven innings and striking out nine batters. Alex Markus earned his first save of the season while pitching the final two innings and striking out two.

Up next: The Maroons are back home on Saturday, March 25 when they host Hampden-Sydney in an ODAC doubleheader. First pitch against the Tigers is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
