RC Baseball Opens Season with 9-6 Win at (R/V) LaGrange

The Lead: Hunter Andrews and Will Merriken each had three RBI as Roanoke topped (R/V) LaGrange 9-6 in the season opener for both teams.

How it Happened

  • Back-to-back singles by Andrews and Cale Agee to open up the second inning put runners on second and third base.
  • Following a Troy Ferrell walk to load the bases, Merriken flied out to score Andrews and move Agee to third base. Agee would come home a squeeze bunt off the bat of Mason Staz to make it a 2-0 game.
  • With score 2-1 in the third inning, Gavin Kandrick reach on a LaGrange error and advanced to second base with one out.
  • Kandrick moved to third on Will Salva fly out and scored on a Andrews single that made the score 3-1.
  • The score stayed that way until the eighth inning when Roanoke was able to score five runs on six hits including RBI singles Andrews and Agee and an RBI double by Merriken. Merriken would also score on a wild pitch to put RC in front 8-1.
  • LaGrange rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning scoring five runs of their own, highlighted by a bases loaded triple by McKinley Erves.
  • Roanoke tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Jeb Byerley delivered a pinch-hit triple then scored on an Andrews sacrifice fly to make it a 9-6 game.
  • Kevin Ledford struck out the side for Roanoke in the bottom of the ninth inning to seal the win. The right-hander went two innings and struck out five to pick up the save. Chris Dudley tossed three innings out of the bullpen to pick up the win.
