The Lead: The Roanoke College men's basketball team made the trip east to face Virginia Wesleyan on Monday afternoon. The winner would claim the third spot in the current Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) standings. The Maroons would hold a slight lead at the break, 29-27, before asserting themselves on the defensive end during the second 20-minutes. The Marlins managed just 19, second half points, as Roanoke cruised to the 69-46 conference win.

How it Happened:

  • Kasey Draper scored to spark a 6-0 Roanoke start to the game. After a Tripp Greene steal and layup, Virginia Wesleyan would answer with five consecutive points to get back to within a point.
  • The Maroon lead would grow to seven, 14-7, after a Justin Kuthan stick back. The next four minutes of play would see the home team complete a 9-0 run to retake the lead at the midway point of the opening half.
  • The lead would be traded three times until a Draper jumper with 6:14 on the clock would see Roanoke take the lead and build it six. The Marlins would once again respond by closing the half on a 6-2 surge to make it 29-27 at the break.
  • The opening minute plus would see the Maroons score the first seven points and after a Greene jump shot, RC was up 36-27, forcing a timeout by the home team. The break did little to slow Roanoke as the visitors would see the lead grow to 12 after a Joshua McClary bucket.
  • McClary gave the Maroons an 18-point advantage with 3:00 to play, 61-43. Draper would outscore the Marlins 8-3 the rest of the way as Roanoke took over the third spot in the ODAC standings with a 69-46 win.
  • Draper finished with a career high 34 points, besting his 32 against Shenandoah in Roanoke's last road game. Kuthan added 12 and Greene would score 10. Kuthan and Ethan Rohan each grabbed a game high eight rebounds while Nick Price handed out six assists.

Up next: Roanoke will continue on the road with a trip to Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday night for a 7:00pm tip with the Royals.
