Late Surge by No. 2 Randolph-Macon Leads Yellow Jackets Over Maroons

  • The Short Story: The Roanoke men's basketball team led the number two team in the nation for more than a half before Randolph-Macon used a late push to leave the Bast Center with a 58-46 point win over the Maroons. Efosa U-Edosomwan led Roanoke with 13 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A low scoring first half started off with the Maroons jumping out to a 7-2 lead at 15:25 thanks to a jumper by Kasey Draper. A 4-0 run by the Yellow Jackets saw them pull within one before the Maroons extended their lead to eight with 5:29 left in the first half. A jump shot by Zach Rosenthal made it a double-digit lead with 1:42 on the clock. A three by R-MC with less than a minute allowed the Maroons to go into halftime with a 19-12 lead. 
  • The Yellow Jackets pulled within four just 1:15 into the second half, but a pair of free throws by Draper put the maroons back on top by six. A jumper by Miles Mallory pulled the visitors within one at 13:48. A three at 13:00 gave R-MC their first lead of the game 31-29. Roanoke retook the lead at 10:56 on a layup by Justin Kuthan, 33-32. However the Yellow Jackets responded with another three to take the lead for the final time at 35-33. R-MC would extend their lead to 14 before Joshua McClary hit a layup with 19 seconds left and the Yellow Jackets escaped with a 58-46 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Roanoke held the Yellow Jackets to a season-low points in a half allowing just 12 in the first 20 minutes. 
  • The Maroons led R-MC in points off turnovers (16-4) and points in the paint (26-20).
  • In addition to U-Edosomwan's 13, Justin also reached double-figures with 11. McClary had a team-high eight rebounds and nearly missed out on a double-double with nine points.
