U-Edosomwan's 25 Points Help Maroons Knock Off Berry (Ga.) in Overtime, 82-76.

  • The Short Story: The Roanoke men's basketball team went on a 13-0 run in the final five minutes of regulation to force overtime against Berry (Ga.) before outscoring the Vikings 14-8 in the extra period to knock off the previously undefeated Vikings 82-76 at the Music City Classic in Gallatin, Tennessee on Monday afternoon. Efosa U-Edosomwan led all scorers with 24 points to help the Maroons improve to 8-1 on the season.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Tripp Greene scored the first points on the game at 18:57 to give the Maroons their only lead of regulation at 2-0. The Vikings went on a 14-4 run to start to pull away from Roanoke, but the Maroons responded with a 10-2 run of their own, capped by a U-Edosomwan layup at 7:17 left in the first half, to tie the score at 16-16.
  • A back-and-forth effort saw Berry with a 23-21 lead with 5:14 left before the break. The Vikings would extend their lead to 10 with 1:23 seconds left before a three-pointer by Greene pulled the Maroons back within single digits at 33-26 at halftime.
  • Eight quick points by Berry to start the second half would see their lead extend to 15 at 17:24. Once again the two teams would wage a back-and-forth battle with Roanoke pulling within 12 at 50-38 with 13:19 left in regulation.
  • A made three-pointer by the Vikings at 5:11 left would be their final points of regulation as the Maroons went on their 13-0 run starting with a U-Edosomwan layup at 4:49 and capped by a Kasey Draper layup with just six seconds left.
  • In overtime, the Maroons took their first lead since 16:31 of the first half with back-to-back baskets by U-Edosomwan and Joshua McClary. The Vikings would pull even at 74-74, but an 8-2 run over the next three minutes allowed the Maroons to come away with the 82-76 win and extend their winning streak to eight games.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Roanoke shot 46.9% from the floor while going 30-64, including 2-for-8 from beyond the arc.
  • The Maroons led Berry in free throws made (20-9), rebounds (43-37), points off turnovers (21-15), second-chance points (11-10), points in the paint (50-38), and bench points (40-22).
  • In addition to U-Edosomwan's game-high 24 points, Justin Kuthan reached 20 points and eight rebounds with Green adding 11 points. Nine Maroons scored in the game with 10 recording a rebound.
  • The eight-game win streak is the longest since a 10-game during the COVID-spring season of 2021 that stretched from the regular season into the ODAC Tournament.
