Maroons Drop Series to N.C. Wesleyan in Sunday Double-Header

The Basics

The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team led by four runs going into the ninth, but N.C. Wesleyan rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth for the win over the Maroons in game two of the series.

Highlights:

  • The Maroons got on the scoreboard first with four runs in the top of the second. With one out, Jonny Wall singled to center and Ty Staz followed with a double to right field putting runners as second and third. A dropped by in right field allowed Carson McCusker to reach second safely, T. Staz to reach third and Wall to score the first run of the game. Tucker Schiavoni hit a single screamer to shortstop, who had no play on the ball that advanced advanced all runners and put the Maroons ahead 2-0. Masons Staz was hit by a pitch to load the bases with just one out. A wild pitch later and McCusker scored from third. Jacob Bonzon then hit a deep sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Schiavoni to score and extend the Roanoke lead to 4-0. 
  • After NCWC cut the lead to two in the bottom of the fifth, the Maroons used a trio of walks and followed by a sac. fly by Corey Coogan and a single by M. Staz to score two more runs to put the lead back up to four.
  • A lead off fly out for the Battling Bishops in the bottom of the ninth was followed by a pair of hits that gave NCWC five runs in the inning for the comeback win, 7-6.

Highlights:

  • NCWC got on the scoreboard first with a run in each of the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.
  • With two outs in the top of the sixth and a runner on first, M. Staz induced a walk before Bonzon hit a deep fly ball to right field. The hit allowed both M. Staz to reach third and Wall to score from second, cutting the Battling Bishops lead to 2-1.
  • The home team went on to add a trio of runs in the bottom of the seventh to push their lead to 5-1, which they held onto for the series sweep.

Up next: Roanoke will return to Salem for their home opener on Wednesday, February 22 when they host Greensboro at the Salem Red Stadium. First pitch with the Pride is scheduled for 4 p.m.
