The Lead: The Roanoke Women's Lacrosse team opened the 2020 season by dropping a 15-10 decision to Christopher Newport on Saturday in Newport News, Va.

How it Happened

  • Zoe Dyer scored 31 seconds into the game to get CNU on the board and spark a 5-0 run to start the game for the Captains.
  • Jenna Kuczo got RC on the board at the 19:24 mark to make it 5-1.
  • Back-to-back free-position goals by Lilly Blair pulled RC to within two at 5-3 with 17:43 to play in the opening half.
  • After CNU scored three consecutive goals to go up 8-3, RC scored back-to-back goals on strikes from Ellie Armstrong and Emerson Foster to make it a 8-5 game with 7:42 left on the clock.
  • Goals by by Kuczo and a score by Blair with three seconds remaining sent the teams to the break with CNU up 9-7.
  • The Captains got the first two goals of the second-half to open up an 11-7 lead with just over 26 minutes to play.
  • Foster and Kuczo scored for Roanoke to close the gap to 11-9 with 22:47 to play but CNU scored four of the next five goals to put the game away.
  • Blair finished with three goals to go along with three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Kuczo finished with three goals as well, while Foster and Armstrong and Foster each finished with a pair of goals.
  • Dyer finished with eight goals and four draw controls. Kendall Krause scored two goals for the Captains a well.
  • Carly Schoudel made 11 saves for Roanoke and  Becca Creekmore made eight stops for CNU.
  • Roanoke held a 31-29 edge in shots. Christophe Newport led 14-13 in draw controls and 20-13 in groundballs.
