Late Goal Lifts W&L Past Maroons in ODAC Championship Game, 2-1

The Short Story: A goal with less than a minute left allowed No. 2 Washington and Lee to sneak by the Roanoke College men's soccer team in the 2022 ODAC Tournament final, 2-1. The win gives the Generals the ODAC automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The entire first half was a defensive battle with Roanoke taking six total shots and W&L taking four.
  • Neither team scored in the first 45 minutes to keep the score at 0-0 at halftime.
  • It was similar for much of the second half until the Generals broke through in the '74 minute with a goal by Weyimi Agbeyyegbe to put the home team up 1-0.
  • Harrison Kraus scored the equalizer for the Maroons at 83:46 off a pass on the right side of the goal from Till Pfleging. Kraus' shot was fired right to left along the bottom of the goal to pull Roanoke even with less than seven minutes left.
  • With just 40 seconds left in the game, W&L scored the heartbreaking goal to put the Maroons in a bind. A free kick deep in General territory with just four seconds left was knocked down allowing W&L to claim the ODAC title.
