Roanoke Splits Opening Tri-Match

The Basics
Match 1 

Score: Roanoke 2 | Lynchburg 3 (20-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-21, 9-15)
Records: Maroons 0-1 / 0-1 ODAC | Hornets 3-1 / 2-0 ODAC
Location: Harrisonburg, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke volleyball traveled to Harrisonburg as they opened the 2020-21 season with a tri-match against Lynchburg and Eastern Mennonite. The Maroons rallied from an 0-2 hole to force a fifth set against the hornets, however, Lynchburg used an 8-2 run to take the finale. Match two would see Roanoke even their record at 1-1 with a straight sets sweep of the Royals.

How it Happened:

  • The set would be tied at 16-16 before the Hornets would score seven of the next eight points to pull away for the win.
  • Lynchburg would keep the momentum to start set number two, racing out to a 6-1 advantage. A Parker Moody kill would pull the Maroons to with two (17-15). Four consecutive points by Lynchburg would allow to Hornets to once again pull away late, taking a 2-0 lead.
  • Another quick start by the Hornets would be answered by Roanoke and the set was tied at 11 apiece. The set would be tied three more times until an attack error by Lynchburg couple with a pair of Ryanna Clark kills would pull RC to within a set, 2-1.
  • Angel Ross gave Roanoke a lead (17-16, but back-to-back kills by the Hornets forced a Roanoke timeout. Out of the stoppage, the Maroons would rattle off four straight and after one final attack error, the match was tied a two sets apiece.
  • Clark and Linsey Bailey would give Roanoke a 2-0 lead in the fifth set. Lynchburg answered eight straight points to take control and go on to the five set victory.
  • Bailey recorded 19 kills with Moody and Clark adding eight each. Olivia Newman assisted on 34 of the Maroons 49 kills. Kennedy Clemmer registered 23 digs and Newman added 17.

Game 2

Score: Roanoke 3 | Eastern Mennonite 0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-21)
Records: Maroons 1-1 / 1-1 ODAC | Royals 0-2 / 0-2 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The second match for the Maroons would pit Roanoke against the host Royals of Eastern Mennonite. With both teams in search of their first win of the season, Roanoke would use a 38-28 kill advantage and 22 Royal errors to record the 3-0 win.

How it Happened:

  • The home team would enjoy an early, 4-1 lead. Roanoke would come back to tie the set at 9-9 before using an 16-4 run to close out the first frame.
  • The Maroons started the second set 3-0 and never trailed in taking a 2-0 lead into the third stanza.
  • The third set would once again see Roanoke start with the lead but the Royals would rally to tie the score at 12-12 and again at 16-16. The Maroons would close out EMU by taking nine of the final 14 points for the 3-0 sweep.
  • Bailey recorded 14 more kills with Ross adding eight. Newman handed out 19 of RC's 35 assists while Clemmer would lead in digs with 17.

Up Next: Roanoke is scheduled to host their first home match of the season on March 18 when they welcome Emory & Henry to the Cregger Center.
