Maroons Show Support For Morgan's Message in 17-4 Win Over Averett

The Lead: The No. 16 Roanoke women's lacrosse team kept the scoring against ODAC newcomer Averett coming as the Maroons came away with a 17-4 win over the Cougars from inside Kerr Stadium.

How it Happened/Highlights:

  • It was a quick start for Roanoke with the first three goals of the game, all for the Maroons, coming from free-position shots from Libby Bowman, twice, and Lilly BlairAverett finally got on the scoreboard at 5:37 to cut the Maroons' lead down to 3-1 after the first quarter. 
  • The second period was all Maroons with Roanoke scoring all six goals in the period. Tiernan Connor led off with a goal just 41 seconds into the period off an assist from Blair. Connor would pay Blair back with a goal at 10:42. Just 16 seconds later, Nicole Harrison took a pass from Bowman for a goal, putting the Maroons up 6-1. Connor, Maddie Stopkowski, and Addison Schmidt finished off the Maroon run to close the first half. Schmidt's goal was on a woman-down, free-position shot.
  • After taking only one shot in the second quarter, Averett went on to score three goals in the third quarter. However, Roanoke saw goals from Connor (2x), Blair, and Bowman to maintain their lead, 13-4. 
  • Four more Maroon goals from Sophia Chickering, Harrison, Blair, and Soria Ebert in the fourth quarter gave Roanoke the 17-4 win.
  • Kyleigh Chickering earned the win after playing the first 30 minutes of the game. 
  • Blair finished the game with four goals, three assists, three ground balls, and three draw-control wins. Connor also finished the game with four goals. 
  • The game was played to support Morgan's Message. The mission of the organization is to "amplify stories, resources, and expertise to strengthen student-athlete mental health, builds a community by and for athletes through peer-to-peer conversations, and provide a platform for advocacy."
