Maroons Score Early in 13-5 Win Over Maryville (Tenn.)

The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team stepped away from ODAC play for a Tuesday matinee against the Scots of Maryville. The Maroons scored in five different innings en route to a 13-5 win at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

Highlights:

  • A big first inning got things started for the Maroons. Depsite only have two hits in the frame, Roanoke used four walks and smart base play to score five runs. The Maroons forced out the Scots starting pitcher just two outs into the first inning. 
  • In the third with two outs, Brody Langlotz reached first on an error by the shortsop and was followed by a pair of singles by Carson McCusker and Jacob Bonzon. On the Bonzon hit to right field, both McCusker and Langlotz came around to score to extend the Roanoke lead to 7-0. 
  • A single Scot run in the top of the fourth was answered by a pair of runs from Tucker Schiavoni and Liam Murphy in the bottom of the first to put Roanoke ahead 9-1 after five complete. 
  • The Maroons led off their half of the sixth inning with a pair of walks before Owen Lawn hit a triple to left field that scored both Conner Butler and Jonny Wall. Lawn would come around during the succeeding at bat on a wild pitch. 
  • After the Scots cut the Maroons lead down to 12-3 in the top of the seventh, Roanoked added a two-out run by Wall in the their half of the inning. Maryville added another two runs in the top of the eighth, but could not make up the different in the 13-5 Roanoke win.
  • Wall finished the game with a pair of hits and three runs scored to lead the Maroons. 
  • Colby Roy earned his first win of the season pitching the first six innings allowing just one run with four strikeouts.

Up next: Roanoke is back in action on Saturday, April 8 with a doubleheader against No. 3 Shenandoah. First pitch with the Hornets is scheduled for 12 p.m. Fans, please note the game will be played at the Salem Kiwanis Field and not Salem Memorial Ballpark due to the Salem Red Sox kicking off their season.
