The Short Story: The Roanoke College women's volleyball team entered the 2022 ODAC Tournament as the No. 8 seed and knocked off top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 in a quarterfinal matchup. The Maroons became the third No. 8 seed team this fall in an ODAC-sponsored sport to upset the No. 1 in the quarterfinal round.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Marlins had a 17-12 lead midway through the opening set before the Maroons went on a 6-1 to tie the score up at 18-18. VWU went on their own run to push the lead back to three at 22-19. However, it was all Maroons in the set from there going on another 6-1 run to close out the first set 25-23 for the 1-0 match lead.
  • After the Marlins leveled the match at 1-1 winning the second set they took a 6-2 lead in the third. Roanoke responded by taking a 9-6 lead on a 7-0 run. From there the Maroon never trailed in the set, not allowing the Marlins to get closer than three points, winning the final three points of the set for the 25-19 set three win and 2-1 match lead.
  • It was a quick start for the Maroons in the fourth set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. And even more so than the third set, Roanoke kept VWU at bay, never allowing them to get any closer than five the rest of the set. A kill by Sydney Harrison capped off the 25-18 set win and the 3-1 upset over the Marlins.
