The Lead:  Behind 23 points from Molly Hassell Roanoke opened 2020 with a 78-73 ODAC win at home over Bridgewater.

How it Happened

  • The score was tied 8-8 early in the first quarter before the Maroons scored seven unanswered points as they took a 15-8 lead on a Hassell jumper with 3:33 to play.
  • RC led 20-15 at the end of the first quarter and extended its advantage to 30-19 following an 8-0 second quarter run that was capped by a Kristina Harrel bucket with 3:54 to play in the half.
  • BC battled back to cut the RC lead to three at 35-32 with just over a minute to play after Ahila Moore sunk a pair of free-throws.
  • The Maroons got back-to-back baskets from Rose Sande and Ayanna Scarborough in the final minute to take a 39-32 lead at the intermission.
  • RC came out of the locker room and scored the first four points of the second-half to take an 11-point lead at 43-32 before BC used a 12-1 run to tie the game at 44 with 4:14 to play in the quarter.   
  • RC would hold a 55-52 lead at the end of three quarters. Then with the score 60-59 mid-way through the fourth quarter, the Maroons went on a 13-2 run that was finished on a Scarborough basket that made the score 73-61 with 2:16 to go in the game.
  • BC was able to chip away and cut the RC lead to 75-72 with 29 seconds left but RC made three free-throws down the stretch to seal the win. 
  • Scarborough had 15 points and Whitney Hopson had 12 to join Hassell in double-digits. Renee Alquiza had nine points, while Hopson grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
  • Moore finished with a game-high 29 points for the Eagles.

Up Next: Roanoke will get back into ODAC action on Saturday when it heads to Virginia Wesleyan for a 2:00 p.m. game.
