The Basics
Score: Roanoke 64 | Eastern Mennonite 34
Records: Maroons 13-7, 8-5 | Royals 3-15, 2-10
Location: Harrisonburg, Va.
The Lead: The Royals raced out to an 8-0 start and held the lead throughout the afternoon to claim the ODAC victory over the Maroons.
How it Happened:
- RC was held scoreless for the game's first five minutes of play as Eastern Mennonite built an eight-point advantage.
- Kristina Harrel would finally get Roanoke on the board but a quick three-pointer by EMU gave the momentum back to the home team.
- A Lexi Deffenbaugh three with 11 seconds to go allowed the Royals to take a double-digit lead into the second period. Roanoke hit just three of their 14 first quarter attempts.
- Harrel, Whitney Hopson, and Ayanna Scarborough combined for a 6-0 start to the second frame.
- A minute later, Harrel picked up a steal and a hoop with Scarborough adding a free throw to cut the deficit to a single bucket, 19-21.
- The Maroons would shoot much better during the second ten minutes (7-18), but couldn't complete the comeback as EMU would score a layup right before the half to make it a seven point game at the break.
- Scarborough and Hopson would answer but RC went 2:45 between hoops and despite keeping the home team off the board, was still facing a deficit (43-40) with 3:30 left in the third.
- Eastern Mennonite would close the quarter by scoring eight in a row and 10 of the final 16 to maintain their seven point edge.
- With 7:43 left on the clock, a Morgan Micallef jumper cut the lead to five, but Roanoke would get no closer as the Royals hit six of seven free throws to help seal the win.
- Scarborough led RC with 18 points and nine boards. Harrel added 15 points while Renee Alquiza posted a double-double with 10 points and a game high 16 rebounds.
Up next: The Maroons will return to the Cregger Center on Wednesday night when they play host to Lynchburg at 7:00pm.
