The Basics
Score: Roanoke 59 | Southern Virginia 36
Records: Maroons 6-1 / 3-1 ODAC |  Knights 0-1
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The Maroons welcomed Southern Virginia to the Cregger Center for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night. It marked the second game of a current, four game home stand for a Roanoke College team looking to add to their current three-game win streak. The first half would see nine lead changes and a pair of ties, but a 12-2 run to open the second half would give RC the lead for good as the Maroons cruised to the 23 point win.

How it Happened:

  • Morgan Micallef and Whitney Hopson would get Roanoke off to a quick, 4-0, start. However, SVU would respond when Amanda Wood scored five straight to give the Knights their first lead.
  • The lead would change hands seven times during an opening quarter that would see the visitors up, 14-13, heading into the second frame.
  • Micallef would once again give the Maroons the advantage before Southern Virginia went on a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 21-15.
  • A Jayla Faison layup stopped the Knights surge and after a Renee Alquiza three-pointer, the deficit had been cut to one, 23-22.
  • After a Knight bucket, Alquiza would score five straight to push the home team back in front with just over a minute left in the period. Raeann Lessing would tie it up and after each team turned it over, the score was tied at the half, 27-27.
  • Alquiza and Hopson would spark the Maroons right out of the break with six straight and after a SVU hoop, Roanoke would score six more to give them their first double digit lead of the night.
  • Southern Virginia would cut the lead but a pair of Kayla Kinsler free throws and another Micallef layup would give Roanoke a 43-32 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
  • The lead would shrink to eight when Rose Sande went on a personal six point run and two Sayre Brandstatter free throws gave the Maroons a 16 point lead with just five minutes to go.
  • Roanoke finished off the Knights with a 8-1 run to end the game, 59-36.
  • Alquiza and Hopson finished with 10 points apiece while Sande would add nine. Alquiza grabbed a team high six rebounds to go with a pair of blocked shots while Kristina Harrel handed out four assists.
  • Wood led the Knights with 10 points with Emma Camden finishing with seven and six rebounds.

Up next: Roanoke will be back in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Thursday night when they host Lynchburg at 7:00pm.
