The Lead: The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team entered the post season as the #4 seed in the 2021 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Lacrosse Tournament. The Maroons played host to the #5 seed Bridgewater on Tuesday night at Kerr Stadium. The Eagles raced out to a 6-2 advantage before a late first half run by Roanoke would make it a one-goal game at the break, 6-5. The visitors used a 6-2 third quarter to pull away. A fourth quarter rally by RC would make it a two-goal game late but the Maroons ran out of time as Bridgewater advanced with a 13-11 win.

How it Happened:

  • Bridgewater would score first but a Jay Frye goal would knot the game at 1-1 after five minutes of play.
  • Two more Eagle scores gave BC the 3-1 lead after one period.
  • George Gilbert cut the deficit in half but a three goal surge would allow Bridgewater to open up their lead.
  • Matt Hemmert scored off an assist by RT Williamson to spark a Maroon rally just before the half.
  • In the final three minutes of the second quarter, goals by Carson Peck and Quinn Evans made it a 6-5 game at the break.
  • The third quarter would belong to the Eagles as they would score three of the first four goals and six of the total eight scores in the period. Luca Docking had a goal and an assist while Wyatt Whitlow scored the other Roanoke goal.
  • Bridgewater made it 13-7 with just over 12 minutes left on the clock. That is when Roanoke started their rally.
  • Owen Curry found Gilbert to start the Roanoke surge. Docking and Whitlow would add unassisted scores before Gilbert completed his hat trick to make it 13-11 with 4:44 left to play.
  • However, Roanoke would be unable to complete the comeback and when the horn sounded, they had been eliminated from the tournament.
  • Gilbert had three goals while Docking would add two goals and two assists and Whitlow scored twice. Docking picked up six ground balls with Sam Balch grabbing five ground balls and causing three Eagle turnovers.
  • Taylor Lewis got the start in goal but was relieved by Cole Hiller mid-way through the second quarter. The duo combined to record nine saves.
