The Short Story: Rose Sande scored 19 points in the first half and 26 in the game to lead the Roanoke women's basketball team to a 74-58 win over Eastern Mennonite on the road in a midweek ODAC matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sande scored the first four points of the game in the first minute to give the Maroons the lead that they would not relinquish in the first half. The Royals pulled within one on two occasions, but both times Roanoke responded and pushed their lead to five at the end of the first quarter, 19-14.
  • The Maroons led by as many as nine with 2:43 left in the first half on a JaBryah Haverkamp layup, 34-25. EMU reacted with a 6-0 run to pull within three just over a minute later. Neither team could put the ball through the rim in the final 1:43 as Roanoke kept a 34-31 lead at the break.
  • The Royals came out of the locker room and scored the first five points of the second half to take their first lead of the game at 9:00, 36-34. Back-and-forth baskets for both teams over the next few minutes saw the Royals take the biggest lead of the game at 43-39 with 6:13 left in the quarter. A 9-2 run by the Maroons over the next three and a half minutes gave Roanoke the lead again, 48-45.
  • Leading 49-47 heading into the final quarter saw the Maroons' offense come alive outscoring EMU 25-11 and pulling away for the 74-58 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Roanoke shot 45.7% from the floor while holding the host Royals to just 34.9%.
  • In addition to Sande's 26 points, Peyton Kirchner finished with 13 and Lauren Keel had 12 for the Maroons.
  • Roanoke led EMU in rebounds (44-40), assists (16-13), 2nd chance points (17-10), points in the paint (46-20), fast break points (13-6), and bench points (19-4).
