Score: #3 Roanoke 20 | #7 Shenandoah 8

Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The Roanoke men's lacrosse team kicked off the 2022 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament when they hosted the #7 seed from Shenandoah at Kerr Stadium. The #3 Maroons just defeated the Hornets in Winchester two weeks ago, 14-9, and looked to make it two in a row in order to advance in the tournament. The game got started late on Tuesday night due to travel issues and with the Maroons leading 3-1, lightning halted the game. As the time grew later and later the game was scheduled to resume at noon on Wednesday. Roanoke scored 20-seconds into the resumption and built an eight-goal lead at the half. Shenandoah got to within seven, but the Maroons pulled away and advanced to the semifinals with a 20-8 win.

How it Happened:

  • Before the weather caused a pause to the game, Roanoke got goals from Trevor Stocks, Luca Docking, and Quinn Evans as the Maroons would go to bed with a 3-0 advantage.
  • With 6:45 remaining in the first quarter, the game would resume and Stocks found Luke Kammerman just 22 seconds into the afternoon to add to the lead. Wyatt Whitlow would score off a feed from Sean Kennedy and the game would be 5-1 after one period of play.
  • Ethan Caldwell scored his first of four goals to start the second frame. Whitlow scored again and when Kammerman hit John Dias in transition, Roanoke had scored eight, unanswered, goals. After seeing the hornets stop the streak, RC got scores from Caldwell (two), Kennedy, and George Gilbert and took a 12-4 lead into the half.
  • Docking, Stocks, and Gilbert would give Roanoke a 3-2, third quarter as the Maroons led by nine heading into the finale.
  • Roanoke built the lead to double digits and when Logan O'Sullivan caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball, took it the length of the field, and found Matthew Albertson, the Maroons would advance in the 2022 ODAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament with a 20-8 win over Shenandoah.
  • Whitlow and Caldwell each scored four times while a quartet of players would score twice. Brooks Klyver dominated the face offs going 20-29. Klyver picked up 11 ground balls, while Docking and DJ Nolan each caused a pair of turnovers. Taylor Lewis got the start and the win, recording seven saves before giving way to Cole Hiller.

Up Next: With the win, the Maroons will travel to Lexington to face #2 Lynchburg in the semifinals on Friday. The scheduled game time is TBA.
