  • W&L Football to Play at Hobart in NCAA First Round

    The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced its field for the 2012 Division III Football Championship on Sunday evening and Washington and Lee will hit the road for a first round contest at Hobart College.

    The Bridgewater College football team opened Spring outdoor practice in a new way by welcoming a pair of Special Olympians to serve as honorary team captains for the day on Monday afternoon in Bridgewater, Va.
  • Scott Abell Tabbed to Run W&L Football

    Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn announced that Scott Abell has been promoted to head football coach effective immediately. Abell had previously served as the program’s assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He replaces Frank Miriello, who announced his retirement from coaching earlier this week after 17 seasons as W&L's head coach.
  • W&L's Miriello Retires from Gridiron

    Washington and Lee mentor Frank Miriello has announced his retirement as the school’s head football coach effective immediately. Miriello will remain as an instructor of physical education through the remainder of the current term. Miriello spent 17 seasons coaching Generals' football.
  • Generals' Westfal Wins Lanier Award

    W&L quarterback Charlie Westfal has been named the 2011 recipient of the Willie Lanier Award, presented annually to the best college football player in NCAA Division II, III and NAIA in Virginia. The award is sponsored by the Touchdown Club of Richmond and the Richmond Times Dispatch and was presented at a special ceremony in Richmond on Wednesday evening.
  • H-SC Falls to Centre in Shootout

    The Hampden-Sydney football team rallied to score 21 points in the second half, but could not quite overcome the 20-0 first quarter deficit to #25 Centre in the first round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship. The Tigers end their season 8-3 overall.
  • Westfal, Sproles Lead ODAC Football Awards

    W&L earned a pair of individual honors as part of the 2011 ODAC Football All-Conference Awards. Charlie Westfal was tabbed the Offensive POY, while Brett Murray was selected as the scholar-athlete. E&H's Devan Sproles was named the Defensive POY, and H-SC's Marty Favret earned Coach of the Year. R-MC's Zac Naccarato garnered top rookie honors.

    The 2011 NCAA Division III regular season is in the books, and Hampden-Sydney is set to play in the tournament. That didn't keep Randolph-Macon from beating the Tigers, 48-34, in the 117th edition of "The Game." Bridgewater came back to top Catholic, 22-19, and Emory & Henry shut down Guilford, 30-6.
  • H-SC to Face Centre in NCAA First Round

    Hampden-Sydney, winner of the 2011 ODAC title, will face the Centre College Colonels in Danville, Kentucky in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship this Saturday. The Tigers received their automatic bid by winning the conference. Centre was the recipient of an at large bid. Their lone loss came to SCAC champion, Trinity (Texas).

  • H-SC and R-MC Team Up With SOVA

    It’s a match of rivals: this Sat., Nov. 12, H-SC will face off against R-MC in one of the South’s oldest rivalry football games, appropriately called “The Game.” This year, however, both schools are joining forces for a Miles for Medals fundraising run that will take the game football on a journey from Farmville to Ashland. All proceeds from the run benefit SOVA.

    Hampden-Sydney earned the ODAC football title in one of three high-scoring games in week 10. H-SC topped Washington and Lee, 42-35, to secure its seventh league crown. Guilford came back from a 20-6 deficit to post its first conference win since 2009 with a 34-27 win over Catholic. Randolph-Macon defeated Bridgewater, 51-36, behind six rushing touchdowns.
  • Tigers Clinch ODAC Football Title

    Hampden-Sydney College clinched the 2011 ODAC Championship on Saturday after defeating Washington and Lee University, 42-35, on Senior Day in Hampden-Sydney. The title is the seventh overall and third since 2007 for H-SC, and also secures a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third straight season.

    This ODAC Football Video Recap includes highlights from action in week nine. Catholic traveled to Lexington for a Friday night tilt with Washington and Lee and fell to the Generals, 49-13. Bridgewater made the trip down I-81 to Emory & Henry and topped the Wasps, 27-14. Hampden-Sydney and Guilford combined for 112 points in Greensboro, with the Tigers coming out on top, 63-49.

Washington and Lee traded jabs with Bridgewater in the fourth quarter and came out on top, 52-42. Randolph-Macon scored 31 first half points in downing Guilford, 45-7.

    Hampden-Sydney and Washington and Lee remain undefeated in ODAC play after the seventh week of the season. H-SC held on for a 38-36 win over Emory & Henry, while W&L came back twice to defeat Randolph-Macon, 34-30. Bridgewater topped Guilford 59-13, and Catholic closed non-conference play with a 24-15 win over Apprentice.

    The Washington and Lee football team recently hosted a Special Olympic athlete as part of the conference-wide initiative. Jared Tomlin was named a "General for a Day" during the Generals game against Guilford on Saturday, October 1.

  • Rogers a Semifinalist for Campbell Trophy

    Hampden-Sydney center Ben Rogers and 126 other collegiate football student-athletes from all divisions were announced as candidates for the 2011 William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Hall of Fame. The Campbell Trophy recognizes the best scholar-athlete in the nation.

    The ODAC is down to a pair of undefeated schools as league teams begin the conference portions of their schedules next week. Randolph-Macon moved to 4-0 for the second straight season with a 35-14 win over Frostburg State University. Jeremy Bowry (pictured) helped R-MC to that win with a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown.

  • Lane Earns Two National Weekly Honors

    Hampden-Sydney senior quarterback Travis Lane picked up some national recognition for his performance in the Tigers' 56-17 shelling of N.C. Wesleyan. D3football.com named Lane to its Team of the Week, one of just two quarterbacks honored this week by the national pundit. He also earned BSN Offensive Player of the Week accolades.

    Washington and Lee received five first place votes and 35 total points as the Generals were picked atop the 2011 ODAC Football Preseason Poll. Hampden-Sydney sits second with 31 tallies and one top nod. Bridgewater also received a first place vote on the way to 25 points and the third position in the annual coaches’ survey.
  • Beiler to Ink Three-Year Deal with 49ers

    Former Bridgewater standout and 2010 D3football.com All-American wide receiver, Tyler Beiler, is set to sign a three-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday. Beiler is one of three NCAA Division III players preparing for training camps, joining Mount Union's Cecil Shorts (draft) and Kyle Miller (UFA) of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
