Roanoke Downs Bridgewater In First Round

Maroons to Face Randolph-Macon in Quarterfinals

SALEM, Va. ---  Roanoke College overcame an 11-point deficit with 11-minutes left to down Bridgewater, 72-69 in the first round of the ODAC Tournament Tuesday evening at the Bast Center. The Maroons move onto the ODAC Quarterfinals and improve to 12-14 on the year, while the Eagles end their year with an 8-18 mark.

This win marked the first post-season win since the 2007-08 season (Washington and Lee, ODAC Quarterfinals) and gives Roanoke 103 wins against its long-time rival. For the Maroons, it was the fourth win over the last five games, their best stretch of the season.

For Page Moir, this was career win #369, which is one victory shy of another milestone. He would tie the late Bob Johnson (Emory & Henry) for the most overall wins as an ODAC Coach. This win gives the Maroons their 12th of the season, doubling last seasons’ win total.

Roanoke shot 44% from the floor and dished out 19 assists while only committing 10 turnovers. The Maroon defense held the Eagles to 37% shooting, including 27% from downtown. Bridgewater out-rebounded Roanoke, 50-37.

With the score 51-40 with 10:55 left, Melvin Felix ignited a 12-0 run with back-to-back three-pointers. Kwasi Amponsah hit a lay-up to cap the run and give the Maroons a 52-51 lead.

From that point on it was back and forth over the next eight minutes. Down 66-65 with 1:35 left, Felix, who finished with a game-best 23 points, converted a conventional three-point play to take the lead for good. He hit four consecutive free-throws in the final minute to ice the game for the Maroons.

Felix led the charge with 23 points, seven rebounds and three assists. He hit 4-of-8 from beyond the arc and 5-of-5 from the line. Logan Singleton had 18 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots. Kwasi Amponsah chipped in 11 points and five assists.

Rick Maloney led Bridgewater with 20 points and 11 rebounds with two blocked shots. Kyle Hammond added 14 points while Ronnie Thomas narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 12 boards.

The men will go to the Salem Civic Center to take on Randolph-Macon in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC Tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25.
