R-MC Tops EMU, 99-91, in Overtime

Yellow Jackets Square Off with Randolph in Semifinals

SALEM, Va. --- The Randolph-Macon College Men's Basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 ODAC Tournament with a 99-91 overtime win against Eastern Mennonite.  The Yellow Jackets will square off with Randolph College in a rematch of the 2011 ODAC tournament title game.  The WildCats defeated Guilford, 75-53, in the final quarterfinal on Friday night.

R-MC (21-5) led by 10 points after a Dylan Cole bucket made the score 74-64 with just over five minutes to play.  The Royals rallied, using a 17-7 run and tying the game on a three-pointer by Adam Burroughs.

Randolph-Macon took the ball out and Trent Walker went the length of the court for a layup, drew a foul and would put the Yellow Jackets in front 84-81 with the ensuing free-throw with four seconds to play.

EMU then sent the game to overtime with a Dajon Daniel three-pointer that rattled in as the horn sounded.

R-MC scored the first four points of overtime, taking an 88-84 advantage on a Andre Simon lay in.  Two Corey Sheppard free-throws for EMU would cut the Jackets lead to two at 88-86 with 3:33 left in the extra frame.  Randolph-Macon scored the next four points and made 7-of-10 free-throws in the final 1:22 to claim its third win in as many years versus the Royals in the league tournament.

Simon led Randolph-Macon with 20 points and 15 rebounds.   Lamar Giggetts had 20 points as well, while Calvin Croskey had 17 and Dylan Cole had 12.   Simon's 15 boards and nine rebounds by Jamie Robinson helped R-MC to a 46-38 edge on the glass.  The win also gives Croskey and fellow senior Adam Desgain the 92nd victory of their career, which is a new program record.

EMU (12-15) was led by Andrew Thorne's double-double as he dropped in a game-high 26 points to go with 10 rebounds.  He was 8-of-12 from the field and made 9-of-12 foul shots.  Daniel added 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, and Owen Longacre and R.J. Sims each chipped in 14 points.

Eastern Mennonite sprinted out to an early 9-2 advantage before the Jackets went on a 21 run, taking an 11 point lead at 23-12 following a Giggetts basket.

Randolph-Macon would take a 40-27 lead into the lockeroom at halftime.    EMU rallied, scoring 26 of the first 36 points of the second stanza to take a five point lead with 12 minutes to go.

R-MC then responded with a 22-7 run of its own to give them a 10 point edge with five minutes to go in the game.
