W&L Women's Basketball Flies Past Emory & Henry, 69-48

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team shot 75.0 percent (18-24) from the field in the first half to take a 42-23 lead into halftime en route to a 69-48 victory over Emory & Henry in ODAC Tournament first round action on Monday at the Warner Center.

W&L (9-15) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead just 44 seconds into the game. Sophomore guard Kristie Langley then opened scoring for E&H (7-18) at 18:52, only to have senior forward Rachel Warrick answer with a jumper at the 17:56 mark (6-2). 

Langley scored once more for the Wasps, but another jumper from Warrick ignited a 16-0 run by the Generals to pull ahead 22-4 with 10:29 left on the clock. E&H came as close as 11 points (26-15) by the 6:02 mark, but W&L's hot shooting continued and it entered the break with the 42-23 advantage.

Junior forward JoBeth Wright cut the lead to 17 (42-25) to open the second half on a layup with 19:36 on the clock. The teams traded baskets over the next 3:27, but the Generals kept pace with the Wasps' shooting for the remainder of the game and the lead never dipped below 17 points. 

W&L finished the contest shooting 58.1 percent (25-42) from the floor, while Emory & Henry was held to just 32.8 percent (20-61).

Senior forward Katy Wilson led all players with 18 points. She also recorded career-bests with seven assists and six blocks, and added four rebounds and two steals for the Blue and White. First-year guard Paige Corvino notched 16 points, Warrick scored 12 and senior guard Megan Marks netted 10 points. 

For the Wasps, sophomore guard Michelle Williams recorded a team-best 16 points, while collecting three rebounds and two assists. Wright tallied eight points and two boards and sophomore forward Carlyta Hamm registered eight points and three boards.

With the win, the Generals advance to the ODAC Quarterfinals, where they will face top-seeded Eastern Mennonite on Thursday at the Salem Civic Center at 1:00 pm.
