SALEM, Va. --- The #12 Hampden-Sydney Basketball team, seeded #2 in the
ODAC Tournament, used an 18-2 run over six minutes spanning the two
halves to build a 15-point lead en route to a 72-49 win over the
#10 seed Roanoke College Maroons.
Hampden-Sydney improves to 23-3 while Roanoke ends its season with
an 11-16 record. The Tigers move on to the semi-finals where they
will play the winner of the Randolph-Macon vs. Guilford matchup at 8 pm on Saturday. This marks
the first semi-finals appearance for H-SC since 2008.
The first half was tightly contested for all 20 minutes with
several ties and lead changes throughout. Following an Andrew
Daniels layup at the 2:58 mark, Roanoke took a 28-27 lead. Just
over a minute later, Harrison George converted a
traditional three-point play, and Khobi Williamson followed with
one of his own with 1:06 to play to put H-SC ahead 33-28.
Hampden-Sydney got the ball back with four seconds to go following
a Maroon turnover in the backcourt and Mike Murray made its count with
a tear-drop running jumper with two ticks on the clock to give H-SC
a 35-28 halftime advantage.
Hampden-Sydney's momentum gained from ending the first stanza on
an 8-0 run carried well after intermission. Greg Lewis opened the
second-half scoring with a mid-range jumper and drained a
three-pointer on the next possession. Williamson and Jordan Thacker
traded layups, but Lewis made another triple at 16:18 to cap an
18-2 run that saw the Tigers go from down one to up 15 in just six
minutes of play.
Roanoke didn't back down though as Julian Ramirez buried two
straight shots from beyond the arc to cut the lead down to nine,
45-36. A George jumper along with two Daniel Eacho free throws kept
it a nine-point game with 13:29 remaining. The Tigers then went on
a 14-0 spurt over the next four minutes to take a 61-38 advantage
and put the game away for good with 9:20 left in the contest.
Four Tigers scored in double figures on the evening as Williamson
and Cam Anderson each posted a
game-high 12 points. Anderson shot 6-of-8 from the floor with four
rebounds in 14 minutes, and Williamson went 4-of-7 overall and
4-of-4 from the free throw line. George contributed 11 points and
six boards while Lewis added 10 points. Murray had game-bests of
five assists and three steals, and Pat
Corrigan scored five points along with a career-high
nine rebounds.
Ramirez led Roanoke with 12 points while Thacker was the lone
remaining double-digit scorer with 10.
The Tigers outrebounded the Maroons 46-33 and dominated points off
turnovers 18-3. H-SC also held a 36-16 advantage in points in the
paint and a commanding 46-12 edge in points off the bench.
