Generals Top Roanoke to Move on to Quarterfinals

LEXINGTON, Va. --- Junior forward Katie Wildes (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy) scored a season-high 14 points to help lead the sixth-seeded Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 68-47 victory over 11th-seeded Roanoke in the first round of the ODAC Tournament at the Warner Center on Tuesday evening.

W&L (16-9) opened the contest with an 11-4 run started by junior forward Wesleigh Vick (Raleigh, N.C. / St. David's School) hitting a jumper at the 17:44 mark. RC (8-18) slowly chipped away at the lead after sophomore forward Cary Beahm (Dendron, Va. / Tidewater Academy) made a layup with 11:09 on the clock to trim the margin to 14-10. Beahm followed with a free throw to cut the lead to three (14-11).

First-year guard Andrea Ferrero (Ridgefield, Conn. / Ridgefield) ignited a 9-2 run with 5:52 left in the first half after she drained a triple (29-16). The Blue and White took a 35-20 lead into intermission.

W&L used a 10-4 spurt at the start of the second half, which began on a layup by sophomore guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) at the 19:42 mark, to stretch the advantage to 21 points (45-24). The Generals would extend the lead to as large as 29 points before Roanoke ended the game on an 8-0 run to reach the final margin.

W&L out-shot the Maroons 46.7 percent (28-60) to 30.2 percent (16-53) from the field, and the Blue and White also went 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from behind the arc. W&L pulled in 43 rebounds, as opposed to RC's 32.

Wildes led the Generals with 14 points and added five rebounds. Junior guard Paige Corvino(Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) pulled in a team-high seven boards, while senior guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) dished out a game-high six assists.

Senior guard Hannah Ward (Fincastle, Va. / Lord Botetourt) tallied a team-high eight points for the Maroons, while sophomore guard Bridget Holleran (Charlottesville, Va. / Monticello) added seven markers and seven boards.

W&L returns to the court on Friday when it faces third-seeded Lynchburg in the Quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament at 8:00 pm at the Salem Civic Center.
