H-SC Tops GC 8-2 in ODAC Tourney

Tigers to Face Loser of LC/R-MC Game

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- After falling 8-3 in day one of the ODAC Tournament, the sixth seeded Hampden-Sdyney Tigers bounced back with an 8-2 win over fifth seeded Guilford College. The loss is the Quakers' second and eliminates them from the Tournament. Hampden-Sydney, which improves to 20-20, will play tomorrow at 3:00pm and will face the loser of the Lynchburg College/Randolph-Macon College game.

Guilford was the first to score, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Hampden-Sydney was able to tie the game in the second, as Erick Herrmann scored on a Patrick Kuhns RBI double.

The Tigers exploded for a big six hit, five run third inning. Chris Martin led off the inning with a single, and after Justin Hebert was walked, Zach Harrelson singled to left field to score Martin. Hebert then scored on a wild pitch to take the 3-1 lead.

After Herrmann was walked, and Flinchum and Kuhns hit back-to-back singles, freshman Hunter Lewis stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. A Lewis RBI single scored Herrmann and kept the bases loaded. Flinchum then scored on an error to put the Tigers up 5-1. Senior Herbie Williams batted in the fifth and final run of the inning as he scored Kuhns.

In the fifth inning, Flinchum reached base safely for the fourth straight time after he was hit as the lead off batter. Kuhns followed him with an RBI double to give the Tigers a 7-1 cushion.

Guilford looked like it would rally in the bottom of the sixth, as back-to-back singles and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out. The Quakers scored one, but Dan Nicoll got out of the inning with just one run scored against him.

The Tigers tacked on one more run in the eighth as Lewis batted in Zeb Cope for his second RBI of the day.

Meanwhile, Luke Rabiej and Aaron Stidham pitched the final three innings without allowing a hit. Starter Dan Nicoll recorded the win after pitching six full innings and allowing two runs, one earned on four hits.

On the day, Flinchum was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs. Kuhns and Lewis each recorded four hits and two RBI. Kuhns also scored a run.
