R-MC Eliminates H-SC From ODAC Baseball Tournament

LYNCHBURG, Va. –-- Freshman Jordan Schmeer delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th as second-seeded Randolph-Macon College rallied past sixth-seeded Hampden-Sydney College, 4-3, Friday afternoon in an elimination game in the ODAC Baseball Tournament at City Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets (23-14) advance to play again on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against an opponent still to be determined. The Tigers finish the season at 27-15.

Freshman Lonnie Dillard, in his first at-bat of the game, drew a leadoff walk in the 11th after fouling off numerous pitches. Freshman Jay Patti sacrificed Dillard to second base. Following an intentional walk to sophomore Travis Lodge, Schmeer singled through the right side to plate Dillard with the game-winner.

H-SC led 3-1 before R-MC rallied in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. Sophomore Mitchell Keeler had a leadoff single and scored on a double by junior Sid Harvey to make it 3-2. That would chase H-SC starter Hunter Lewis (8 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K). Sophomore Michael Wallman pinch-ran for Harvey at second. A base hit by freshman Blake Saathoff moved Wallman to third. Sophomore pinch-hitter Michael Kroll was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With one away, Lodge singled to bring home Saathoff with the tying run. The Tigers got out of the jam with a double play to force extra innings.

After the Tigers plated a pair in the top of the first, the Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Christian Sanderson was hit by a pitch with two away and scored on a double by freshman Stuart Brown to cut the margin to one at 2-1.

Sophomore Nicholas Maiolo paced the offense for the Yellow Jackets with three hits, while Schmeer finished with a pair of hits and one stolen base.

Sophomore Austin Bain earned the win, allowing one hit and one walk in two scoreless innings with one strikeout. He followed senior starter Jamie Hendrick (7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) and junior Glenn McLaughlin (2 IP, 1 H, 3 K).
