Kosgei Wins First Crown, Pernisi Collects Second Straight
FOREST, Va. --- Lynchburg College and
Washington and Lee University split the 2010 ODAC Cross Country
Championship races on Saturday at the Presbyterian Home in
Lynchburg, Va. The Hornets' came out on top in the men's 8K
race, while the Generals' earned #1 billing through the women's 6K
race. Guilford's Derick Kosgei garnered the
individual men's title, earning him the ODAC Men's Runner of the
Year award. Lynchburg's Jennie Pernisi earned her
second-straight ODAC Women's Runner of the Year accolade after
capturing the individual title.
The Top-14 finishers for both the men and women earn All-ODAC
honors. The first seven receive All-ODAC First Team
accolades, while the second seven garner All-ODAC Second Team
laurels.
On the men's side, Lynchburg's squad finished with 34 points. Guilford College placed second with 64 points, followed by Virginia Wesleyan College (76), Bridgewater College (89), Roanoke College (122), Washington and Lee University (125), Hampden-Sydney College (216) and Randolph College (252). Aside from Kosgei's winning time of 25:41.00, Chad Norton (26:43.00, 6th) and David Cason (27:49.00, 14th) also placed in the Top-14 for the Quakers. The Hornets had six runners place in the Top-14 and were paced by Ryan Van Alstine's third place time of 26:20.00. Cody Stanton (26:25.00, 4th), Nolan Compton (26:52.00, 8th), Lawrence Minor (26:59.00, 10th), Brian Robinson (27:17.00, 12th), and Daniel Cutright (27:24.00, 13th) all scored for the Hornets.
Other notable men's individual finishers include Virginia Wesleyan's Sean Whitson, who finished the course in 25:44.00 for a second place nod, David Kidd (26:50.00, 7th) and Nick Lauter (26:59.00, 9th). Eastern Mennonite's Richy Bikko recorded a fifth place finish with a time of 26:39.00, while Bridgewater's Jake Griffin crossed the finish line in 27:09.00 for an 11th-place mark.
On the women's side, the Generals placed first with 46
points. Lynchburg finished closely in second with 47 points,
followed by Bridgewater (65), Roanoke (88), Virginia
Wesleyan (111), Guilford (169) and
Randolph (205). Pernisi and her winning time of
22:58.00 was joined on the All-ODAC squad by teammates
Krystal Foster (23:44.00, 4th), Molly Galloway (24:04.00, 8th) and
Kiley Trennepohl (24:14.00, 10th). Washington
and Lee was paced by Rebecca Bryer's third-place finish
(23:25.00). Lauren Schultz (23:48.00, 5th), Annelise Madison
(24:18.00, 11th) and Katherine Fenwick (24:22.00, 12th) also all
helped propel the Generals to the No.
1 spot.
Other noteworthy women's times include Bridgewater's Olivia
Mills (23:20.00, 2nd), Molly Smith (23:59.00, 7th) and Katie
Notorangelo (24:33.00, 14th), Roanoke's Maggie Moore (24:10.00,
9th) and Lauren Kennedy (24:30.00, 13th) and Virginia
Wesleyan's Kelly Fauth (23:52.00, 6th).
Lynchburg's Doug Thomasey was tabbed the men's ODAC Coach of
the Year, while Washington and Lee head coach Kris Hoey
garnered the women's ODAC Coach of the Year
accolade.
Lynchburg's Cody Stanton was named the ODAC Freshman of the Year, while Washington and Lee's Rebecca Bryer collected the honor on the women's side.
Washington and Lee's Robert Warneford-Thomson was tabbed the
men's ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while
Lynchburg's Molly Galloway earned the women's laurel.
