W&L Defeats R-MC, 4-3, to Advance in ODAC Tournament

ASHLAND, Va. --- Sophomore forward Maggie Waxter scored two goals to lead the fifth-seeded Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 4-3 victory against fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon on Saturday at St. Gertrude's High School in the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals.

The Generals (11-7) scored two goals in the first 22 minutes to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Senior forward Candice Stefanic registered the first off an assist from senior midfielder Lindsey Purpura eight minutes after the opening whistle. It marked Stefanic's 11th goal of the season.

First-year midfielder Abby Avery tallied the second goal. Sophomore defender Kendall Peterson struck the ball from the top of the circle, and Avery redirected the ball into the back of the cage in the 22nd minute.

R-MC (6-12) cut the lead to 2-1 with 10 minutes left in the first half on senior defender Carrie Jacobs' 14th goal of the season. The Blue and White regained a two-score advantage, when Waxter notched her first goal of the game at the 31:22 mark. Sophomore forward Allie Barry was credited with an assist on the play.

W&L took the 3-1 lead into halftime, but the Yellow Jackets scored three minutes into the second half to cut the deficit to 3-2. Waxter provided the Generals with an insurance goal with 14 minutes left in the game off a pass from Peterson. It marked Peterson's second assist of the game.

Randolph-Macon closed the gap to 4-3 with 6:39 left in the contest, but could not score the equalizer in the final minutes. Waxter now has 13 goals on the season, which marks the seventh-most by a General in a single-season.

Junior Megan Axelrod played the entire game in goal and made seven saves. Junior Shannon McMurray started for R-MC and made six saves, while giving up three goals. First-year Kelsey Stanley subbed in at halftime, making two saves in the final 35 minutes. Each team took 21 shots and had seven penalty corners.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Randolph-Macon at 2:00 pm, but the Yellow Jackets home field was improperly lined and was unplayable. The contest was then moved to St. Gertrude's, and started at 3:15 pm.

The Generals now advance to the ODAC semifinals for the first time since the 2010 season. W&L will play at top-seeded Lynchburg on Wednesday.
