Washington and Lee No. 1 in Tightly Packed ODAC Field Hockey Tournament Field

FOREST, Va. --- Two deep ties dictated the formation of the 2022 ODAC Field Hockey Tournament field following regular season ending results on Saturday afternoon and evening.

A pair of three-way stalemates involved five of the six teams in the postseason bracket, including position for the top-three seeds. University of Lynchburg, Shenandoah University, and Washington and Lee University featured in that logjam. The Generals came out on top following application of the conference's tiebreaking protocols, awarding W&L the #1 seed in the field.

Goal differential in games among the tied teams sifted out the first stalemate. Lynchburg, Shenandoah, and Washington and Lee each went 1-1 against each other. The Generals, thanks largely to their 5-2 victory over Shenandoah this past Wednesday, owned a +2 differential with Lynchburg sitting even and Shenandoah at a -2 margin. Lynchburg, as the #2 seed, joins W&L with a bye through the quarterfinal round, while Shenandoah will be one of two quarterfinal hosts as the third seed.

Roanoke College is the only tournament team not directly impacted by tiebreakers with the Maroons earning the fourth seed outright. They will host a quarterfinal outing this coming week.

The remaining tie also included three teams and needed goal differential to determine seedings positions, but with an added wrinkle. Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite University, and Randolph-Macon College tied at 3-5 in the standings. They went 1-1 against each other, lost to each of the four teams above them in the ODAC standings, and defeated both teams below them in the table. When applying goal differential margins, Bridgewater and Randolph-Macon remained in a tie at +1, but Eastern Mennonite fell out of the tied scenario with a -2 margin.

This created a new tie featuring the Eagles and Yellow Jackets. By conference rule, this new tie reverts back to head-to-head results to restart the process with the new teams tied. Bridgewater defeated Randolph-Macon, 2-0, in early October, providing the determining factor in the tiebreakers. Bridgewater will play as the fifth seed, while Randolph-Macon caps the field in sixth position.
