W&L, BC Top ODAC Indoor Track Podium for Second Straight Season

SALEM, Va. --- It came down to the wire on the men's side of the ledger, but by Sunday's end the same two schools stood at the top of the podum for the second straight year after 32 events at the 2018 ODAC Indoor Track Championships. Bridgewater College captured its fifth straight women's crown, while Washington and Lee University collected 33 points over the final two events to win by four points over Bridgewater and secure its second men's title in as many seasons.

The second year competing at the Kerr-Cregger Field House at Roanoke College saw the creation of two new individual honors. The league's coaches voting for both field and track athletes of the meet, splitting what was one award into two.

Virginia Wesleyan University runner Marissa Coombs earned track athlete of the meets honors, while BC's Courtney Adams took home field athlete recognition. Fellow Eagle teammate Davonta Womack secured men's track athlete distinction, while Eastern Mennonite University jumper Grant Amoateng was tabbed the men's field athlete. The women's top rookie award went to Roanoke speedster Quinn Harlan, while Lynchburg College sprinter Azavier Kirtley garnered the men's top rookie award. W&L mentor Brandon Uhl and BC head coach Brian Flynn took home men's and women's top coaching honors, respectively.

The final two individual honors were selected by the conference's sports information directors. Bridgewater multi-event standout Amber Celen and Washington and Lee distance runner Hank Patrick earned the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards.

Just two records changed hands and a third was matched despite a high level of competition. Womack matched the ODAC championship record in the 60-meter dash with a preliminary time of 6.84 seconds. He'd eventually win the event in 6.87 seconds.

The most eye-opening performance came in the women's 60-meter dash. Harlan blistered the competition, which included previous record-holder Celen. Harlan finished in 7.46 seconds, which not only set both ODAC overall and championship records, but is unofficially the second-fastest time in NCAA Division III history.

Womack won a meet-best three events and headed a list of five athletes that claimed multiple event titles. In addition to his 60m victory, Womack won the 200-meter dash (22.39) and the long jump (6.89m; 22-7.25). W&L mid-distance runner MackKenzye Leroy earned gold in both the 800-meter (1:58.64) and mile (4:26.80) runs, while BC distance runner Jamie Hiegel added titles in the 3,000-meter (8:41.94) and 5,000-meter (15:51.95) runs to his individual cross country championship in the fall.

Virginia Wesleyan's Coombs did much like Hiegel in adding victories in the 800-meter (2:16.82) and mile (5:21.00) runs to her cross country crown. Celen out-sprinted the field in the 200-meter dash (25.13) and 60-meter hurdles (9.01).
