H-SC Topples VWC in ODAC Quarterfinals

Tigers to Face Maroons on Saturday in Semifinals

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team wasted little time punching its ticket to the ODAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament semifinals, scoring a 17-7 win over the visiting Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins. The Tigers will travel to Roanoke College this weekend.

The Tigers scored the eventual game-winning eighth goal less than 20 minutes into the contest. Hampden-Sydney scored the first five goals on the day, including two scores from Micah Keller. Kevin Topper put the Marlins on board at the 4:10 mark of the first quarter, but Cole Hawthorne scored his second goal of the period to put Hampden-Sydney up 6-1 after the first 15 minutes.

Keller, Nate Cundy, and Ryan Martin posted the first three tallies of the second quarter to give H-SC a 9-1 lead with 10:18 to go in the half. Kyle Wright and Damian Becker scored back-to-back VWC goals, but Cundy found the back of the net for the second time in the frame to send the Tigers into halftime up 10-3.

VWC's Curran Lee scored the Marlins' fourth goal just 44 seconds after halftime, but Hawthorne and Cundy regained control for H-SC with goals at 12:21 and 10:39. Brock Waddell and Carter Mavromatis each scored to close out the quarter with a 13-5 Tigers lead.

Adam Nycz scored 55 seconds into the final frame for the Marlins and Andrew Adamson pocketed a goal at 5:21, but sandwiched in between those two scores were four Hampden-Sydney goals, including two from Ben Clarke.

Hawthorne, Martin, Cundy, and Keller all contributed with a hat trick. Keller also had three assists while Hawthorne had two helpers. Clarke tacked on two goals and one assist while Eric Gorsline torched the net twice. Mavromatis contributed with a goal and an assist. Brad Mostowy went 14-of-21 face-off attempts along with 10 ground balls. Cody Hornung recorded 10 saves and four ground balls.

Seven different players score for Virginia Wesleyan with Adamson adding an assist. Hampden-Sydney collected 41 ground balls compared to 30 for Virginia Wesleyan. The Tigers won 17 of the game's 26 face-offs and went 19-21 on clears, compared to 21-26 for VWC. H-SC was also 2-4 on man-up opportunities and held VWC to a 0-4 performance.

The Tigers will travel to Roanoke College on either Saturday or Sunday for the semi-finals at a time to be determined. The winner of that game will play in the ODAC Championship match.
