GREENSBORO, N.C. --- The Virginia Wesleyan
men's tennis team defeated Guilford College, 5-2, in the ODAC
quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. The
Marlins improved to 11-11 overall and will now face top-seeded
Washington and Lee in the semifinals, while Guilford ended its
season with an 8-8 overall mark.
Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to the early lead by winning two of
the three singles matches, including a thrilling 8-6 decision at
the No. 1 spot by Graham Wilson and Drew Tomajczyk over
Trevor Cox and Erik Meiler.
The Quakers took the No. 2 spot, but Virginia Wesleyan emerged
impressively at No. 3 where Tyler Chang and Lawrence
Hunter won 8-0.
Virginia Wesleyan extended its lead in singles where Tomajczyk won
at the No. 2 spot 6-4, 6-4 over Cox, while Spencer Bullock won
7-6(2), 1-6, 6-4 over Meiler at No. 3. Chang added a victory
for VWC at No. 4, 6-2, 6-3 over Mark Cheong.
Virginia Wesleyan will continue play in the tournament on Saturday,
April 27, taking on No. 1 seed Washington and Lee University in the
ODAC semifinals at VWC's Everett Tennis Center at 9 a.m.
