
LEXINGTON, Va. --- The 32nd-ranked and top-seeded Washington and Lee men's tennis team won its 11th straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference title with a 5-2 victory over second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at the Upper Courts.
The Marlins (10-11) took two of the three doubles matches, putting pressure on the Generals (13-4) to perform in singles. VWU won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, with the W&L tandem of junior T.J. Rudden (Mountain Lakes, N.J. / Mountain Lakes) and senior Noah Tapp (Lexington, Ky. / Henry Clay) winning at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-2.
In singles, the top three positions all went to a third set, but the bottom half of the lineup carried W&L. The Generals leveled the match at 2-2 when Rudden defeated Connor Cummings at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0. First-year Harry Kittredge (Alexandria, Va. / The Field School) gave the Blue & White its first lead of the match when he downed Michael Portera at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0. Tapp followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Henry West at No. 4 singles, and junior Alex Fedor (Salem, Ore. / South Salem) clinched the match with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Anthony Wilson at No. 3.
Washington and Lee has now won 39 total ODAC Championships in men's tennis. The Generals will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, which begins on Friday, May 14. The site and opponent will be revealed on Monday.
